Steven Maxson is much in demand as an organist, conductor, choir-trainer, workshop-leader, pianist, composer and arranger. He was born in Lancashire, and educated at the University of Oxford, where he was Organ Scholar of Keble College. For six years, he was the Assistant Organist of Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral. Subsequently, he spent six years as the Organist and Master of the Choristers of Grimsby Parish Church, training the choristers at the Choir School, Saint James’ School, to sing five weekly choral services. He was the Musical Director of the Grimsby Bach Choir for over twenty years, and was one of two founding musical directors of the North East Lincolnshire Youth Choir. He was Organist and Director of Music of Grimsby Minster, having previously been Assistant Organist at the Minster for eight years. He is the Diocesan Director of Music for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough, and Director of Music for St Mary's Cathedral, Middlesbrough. He has toured extensively in Europe as an organist and a choral conductor, and has broadcast frequently on local, national and international radio and television. Recordings include work as an organist, accompanist, conductor, composer and arranger. He has a wide professional repertoire – being at home in the classical tradition as well as work as a jazz pianist or in the use of world music in the sphere of choral music. His compositions and arrangements, similarly, span various musical genres and styles. Steven is available for work as an organist, pianist, keyboard player, conductor, workshop leader, choral animateur, vocal coach, composer, arranger, accompanist, adjudicator or examiner.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

My performances are known for being tailored to the individual needs of the clients as well as for covering a wide range of repertoire, according to needs.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I have performed in churches, cathedrals, concert halls, theatres as well as more intimate venues such as private homes, corporate events, wedding receptions. My performing has taken me across the UK as well as Europe and beyond. As a conductor, I have also conducted in a football stadium, from the centre of the pitch!

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

As an organist, I have been very heavily influenced by one of my teachers, Gordon Stewart. As well as being a technically virtuosic player, Gordon has a real ability to make the instrument sing and to connect with his audiences.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I have played for Mass at Nôtre Dame Cathedral in Paris, to a congregation of 2500 people.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We always try our best to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let us know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

If necessary, this can be provided.

How much time do you need to set up?

As an organist, I would need very little time to setup, other than familiarising myself with the instrument. I can also provide a high-quality, portable instrument which takes about 15 minutes to setup.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

I have a very wide repertoire but am happy to tailor what I play to the client's needs. I am able to play a very wide range of repertoire, if provided with sheet music, and don't need long to need new repertoire.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

I can provide my own, high-quality instrument, or can use the organ or piano in the building concerned.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

There is no problem with this, given sufficient notice. Depending upon the complexity of the music, there may be a fee for this, according to the practice time needed.
