Verified profile

Originally hailing from the Shetland Islands, Sophie draws influence from her traditional roots but also harbours a passion for contemporary music, ranging anywhere from Berio to Bowie. Since graduating with a first class honours from the Royal Northern College in 2016, Sophie has enjoyed a vibrant and diverse freelance career. As a soloist, Sophie has had the pleasure to perform all over the country at venues including the Theatre Royal in Nottingham, the Byer’s Theatre in St. Andrew’s and Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery and at the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival. She was also featured as a soloist on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune,’ programme, has twice been finalist and runner up in the innovative Future Blend project, and was the recipient of the 2018 United Kingdom Harp Association Award. Sophie was also honoured to be a finalist in the Royal Northern College of Music’s Gold Medal competition, the highest accolade the college awards for solo performance. As a versatile orchestral & ensemble player, Sophie has collaborated with a number of different musicians - Some personal highlights have been performing Berio’s folk songs, playing as part of a big band, being Principal harpist of the RNCM Sinfonietta whilst performing at Cantiere Festival in Montepulciano, Italy and performing Max Richter’s ‘Vivaldi’s four seasons: recomposed’ with Cosmo Strings at Malta International Arts Festival. Most recently, Sophie has been accepted onto Yehudi Menuhin’s ground-breaking scheme ‘Live Music Now!’, which sends musicians to perform in schools, care homes, hospitals and day centres. After a critically acclaimed run as part of the Made in Scotland Showcase for the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival 2019, Sophie is now touring her exciting new venture, ‘Notes from Shetland to Shanghai,’ a project inspired by music and poetry from across the globe alongside the emotional impact of migration, across the UK.

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I always try to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let me know and I'm sure we'll sort something out!

How much time do you need to set up?

I usually like 30 minutes to set up, this gives me time to tune my harp, warm up and deal with any unexpected logistics!

Is the transport of your harp included in your quote?

Yes - I've included all travel costs, including the transport of my harp, in my quotes.

Do you need any equipment provided to play outdoors?

None at all - my instrument is played acoustically so I don't need any equipment. If it is raining then I will need full cover or to perform indoors as my instrument is valuable and could be damaged

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

My set lists are crafted from countless performances and learning what works best to ensure you and your guests have a great time but yes, I am always happy to tailor my set list to set the exact tone you would like for your event.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

If a song isn't included in our song list there may still be a chance I already know it. If there is a special song you'd like me to learn, I’m happy to do this for you. I am always happy to learn two new songs for your event but after this, there is a fee of £20 per song for this service to take into account rehearsal and arranging time.

What do your clients love most about your performances?

I believe Clients enjoy my enthusiasm for making their day as enjoyable for them as possible and my openness to learning new things, Stevie Wonder and Led Zeppelin were so enjoyable to learn so please, never hesitate to ask for something new!

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Highlights for me have been The Royal Albert Hall in London and The Sage in Gateshead. Some of the most beautiful wedding venues I have played are The Vu in Bathgate, House for an Art Lover in Glasgow and Kirknewton Stables In Edinburgh.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

I love being influenced by artists of every genre, particular favourites of mine are Arcade Fire, David Bowie and Taylor Swift.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I’ve performed at a variety of high class events - solo performances as far south as Craxton Studios in London and as far north as Mareel Arts Centre, orchestral performances at Malta International Arts Festival. Audience members have included Scotland’s first minster, Nicola Sturgeon and Scotland’s own Dragon’s Den member, Duncan Bannatyne!
