We are Solid Steel, a UK-based Caribbean band and company with authentic fully professional musicians for hire. We're available for any event, live or online – so welcome to… the reliable sound of sunshine! Please explore the exceptional work we do at events nationwide which include weddings, corporate & other events and music workshops. We are a steel band and company of steel pan (steel drum) playing musicians available for hire to perform live or virtually at events held in London, the UK and internationally. We’re also a family band with a history that can be traced back to the Windrush generation of steel band players that first introduced the new, exciting sound of the steel pan to London. Consequently, our band’s mission is to entertain and also transport the imagination of our audience equally to the beauty of a Caribbean beach and the excitement of a Caribbean carnival! Why choose Solid Steel's musicians ahead of those from other steel bands? 1) The band is a long-established professional band that is professional in its organisation. Founded by the half/Trinidadian/half-British Paul Cherrie in 1986, the band’s origins are very authentic- and naming this band ‘Solid Steel’ was a real statement of professional intent. 2) The band runs an office. Professionally. Phone calls between real humans are encouraged and emails and messages of all kinds are handled promptly and efficiently. You will receive a simple contract from us that will leave you in no doubt that the bespoke services you wanted to book and what we are providing are one and the same. 3) Musically we excel with a long reputation for only hiring the very best professional steel pan musicians to perform for you. We are not an amateur community band of players who are only really capable of sounding good playing in a band of 50 and who will turn up late at your event wearing their own branded t-shirts. 4) Entertainment is our business. We don’t only play well, but we sing well too- if required. For 99% of steel bands this is not an option. But also we smile, we laugh, we wear good costumes, we interact with the audience- and we enjoy ourselves! In our experience this is the best way- if needed- to encourage an audience to enjoy itself too! 5) Our prices are competitive. Despite this being our full-time job, we are not necessarily more expensive than other bands and will generally be able to match their quotes if fairly challenged to do so. We offer a wide variety of steel band services to the TV & Film industries, the corporate world and, of course, private individuals who require our steel band for their private party and wedding celebrations.

We booked the Solid Steel Band as an end of term celebration for the children at the school. In such strange times it was fantastic to have them in school performing and giving children of all ages an opportunity to play the drums - all done safely and with much enjoyment! They were friendly, flexible and easy to work with. Thank you!

Cisco recently had it's first 'Virtual Carnival' and as part of that event we had the magnificent Mark Cherrie on his Steel Pans (drums), he was amazing, gave a real vibe and feel of carnival. We also had a DJ (7oel) and a word artist called Desree. Mark's playing bought a real authentic Caribbean touch to the event and we'll definitely be booking him next year, he's also lovely to work with...!

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Most traditional steel bands principally play ‘Caribbean Folk’ music consisting of calypso and Harry Belafonte ‘island music’- along with some old Latin-American ‘standards’. We really enjoy playing these wonderful melodies but also meet the modern demand by playing pop and reggae, including professional-standard vocals.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

In alphabetical order and to name just the first few!: Anugraha Hotel, Egham Birmingham NEC Arena Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire Cafe Royal, London Celtic Manor, Wales Chelsea Physic Garden, London Chester Race Course, Cheshire Claridge’s, London Clearwell Castle, Gloucestershire Coq d’Argent, London Cowley Manor, Gloucestershire

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Lord Kitchener The Mighty Sparrow Stevie Wonder Toots Hibbert Miles Davis Antonio Carlos Jobim The Beatles Al Jarreau Sergio Mendes Kurt Elling Ed Sheeran The Cherry Pickers Bob Marley Harry Belafonte UB40 Michael Jackson Sonny Rollins George Benson Eva Cassidy Paul McCartney John Lennon Roberta Flack Bill Withers Aretha Franklin Marvin Gaye Sting Paul Simon

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Most recently, in 2020 & 2021 we do have a couple of tv and film appearances that feature our steel band. One is a movie called ‘Mangrove’ directed by Sir Steve McQueen and the other is a Warner Brothers half-animation, half-live action movie involving iconic cat and mouse characters who have historically been involved in lots of chase scenes. :)

Do you have different line-up options?

Here are a few of our line-up options all of which may include vocals on request prior to booking:- Steel pan/drum soloist. Steel pan/drum soloist with backing tracks. Steel pan/drum duo. Steel pan/drum duo with backing tracks Steel band (3-8 piece). A 20-piece steel band.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We will always try to be as flexible as possible with our clients.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes

How much time do you need to set up?

30 minutes is normally sufficient time.

Can you roam around while you perform?

Yes, we can be a Pan Roun’ Neck steel band. Very few steel bands offer this roaming or strolling steel band format, but we do!

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

We can provide bespoke playlists, if required, but please bear in mind that we normally only get to play 25-30 songs and are really experienced in determining the music best suited for a particular audience.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

Yes

Can you learn song requests before the event?

We can learn requests and even provide bespoke playlists, if required, but please bear in mind that we normally only get to play 25-30 songs and are really experienced in determining the music best suited for a particular audience.
