About Tog Fàire

Scottish & Irish tunes both trad and contemporary, on flute, whistles and guitar. With songs in Scottish Gaelic and English.
Celtic folk band
Brighton and Hove
Public liability insurance of £10 million

Simon is a flautist (specialising in folk but with a classical and jazz background), and whistle player. He also sings in both English and Scottish Gaelic, and this October won the Aigeallain Airgid (Silver Pendent), a prestigious singing competition at the Royal National Mòd. He's performed on the Gaelic language TV channel BBC Alba. Jake is a contemporary guitarist and arranger from Brighton with a varied musical background. Recording on several EDM, funk and folk records, writing and touring original music with the duo ‘redbook’ as well as performing with show bands across the UK, EU and UAE. Having known each other for many years and worked together in various genres and larger ensembles, Jake and Simon began swapping their favourite folk tunes and exploring sets as a duo at the start of 2023. They've now found their stride and love delving into every corner of the tradition, from toe-tapping and fiery jigs and reels, to haunting laments. Many of the tunes they play are collected from current composers and tradition bearers, alongside ones that can be traced back centuries. Simon is in Scotland as often as he can get away with, singing, playing and learning from whoever he can at festivals such as the Mòd and Fèis Rois. Both Simon and Jake can be found at sessions in Lewes, Brighton and London whenever they can find the time. After playing for Lewes Folk Club, the organiser, Valmai, said this about us: "A brilliant evening with Jake Tweddle & Simon Stallard. Beautiful, sensitive, exciting and very entertaining tunes & songs...The instruments were played with great skill and deep understanding, and complimented each other perfectly." We're new to Encore and still building this profile, but we are highly experienced performers.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

We play an engaging mix of authentic traditional and modern folk music, steeped in the stories behind each one. We're more niche than your typical acoustic covers band for sure, but we're proud of our musical depth and richness of sound. Our sets can be exciting, moving, captivating and all things in between.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

We have performed in folk clubs, bars, the gardens of historic venues, and more commercial music venues like The Folklore Rooms in Brighton. We are a compact duo and can suit all kinds of venues, amplified or not.

Do you have different line-up options?

Tog Fàire is a duo and so only performs as the same two musicians, Simon Stallard and Jake Tweddle. Simon also performs as a soloist, and Jake can be found in bands of other genres, but Tog Fàire's lineup is always the same.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Let us know as soon as you can, we will always adjust to your needs as they arise as far as possible.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

No, this is not something we offer at present.

How much time do you need to set up?

If there is PA equipment to set up then we will generally require up to an hour depending on access to the performance space. If performing acoustically, we can be ready in just a few moments.

Can you roam around while you perform?

If performing without amplification, yes we can be mobile as we play.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

We craft our sets carefully, but we're happy to discuss the content with you. We can adapt our set to focus more on high-energy, toe-tapping tunes, or softer melodic tunes for a chilled background. We are happy to discuss the vibe you're going for and any requests you may have.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

Provision of PA equipment is not included in our quote, if you need this from us we are happy to arrange it with you in addition.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

We can, let us know what you would like and we will do our best to accommodate. We may need to add a fee for this, depending on the rehearsal time that we'll need to put your request together. However if it's a song we're already familiar with or which sits within the folk genres we specialise in, then we may not need to charge at all.
