Aged 23, Sam is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied Bass Trombone, under Bob Hughes, and Contrabass Trombone, under Keith McNicoll. Now, Sam freelances around the UK with ensembles such as The Young Musician Symphony Orchestra, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and the London Musical Theatre Orchestra. He performs in a variety of formats and styles whilst also utilising his ability to play auxiliary instruments too. These include Tenor Trombone, Jazz Trombone, Contrabass Trombone, Euphonium and Tuba. Sam also enjoys working as a solo artist too and has entered soloist competitions such as the ‘Lätzsch Trombone Festival Bass Trombone Competition’ and the ‘International Trombone Association Bass Trombone Competition’. In previous years, Sam has competed in and won the ‘Charlton House Lyrical Brass Competition’, the ‘Royal Academy of Music John Solomon Brass Prize’ and the ‘British Trombone Society Bass Trombone Competition’. Sam has also taken part in the Dublin Brass Festival and the Alessi Trombone Seminar, where he played and received coaching from the world’s top brass musicians and came ‘Runner Up’ in Soloist Competitions within these events. Sam has competed in BBC TV's ‘Young Musician of the Year’ competition and has performed on the Radio as part of BBC Radio’s ‘Brass Soloist of the Year’. Through all these competitions, Sam has played as a soloist with the City of London Sinfonia, Foden's Brass Band, and is looking to perform his first concerto with an orchestra next year. Sam has also performed with several Chamber groups including the Olazti Trombone Quartet, the Trafalgar Brass Dectet and the Suffolk Sinfonia Wind Octet. In the future Sam plans to continue performing as a freelance Musician, as well as a Solo Bass Trombonist and is looking forward to working in continental Europe and beyond as well as home in the UK.
