Ryan began playing the tenor trombone at the age of 7, before moving to bass trombone a few years ago, under the tuition of Ross Lyness. After the move he played with the City of Belfast Youth Orchestra, Ulster Youth Orchestra, Ulster Youth Jazz Orchestra and was Principal Bass Trombone of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for the 2013-2014 season, having also been a member in the 2012-2013 season.
He has played under conductors including Simone Young, John Wilson, Vasily Petrenko, Francois Xavier Roth and Paul Daniel. He has also had the privilege of playing in some of the greatest concert venues in the United Kingdom including the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican, the Sage Gateshead, the Waterfront Hall Belfast and the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
Ryan is currently studying a BMus in Bass Trombone at the Royal College of Music, under the tution of David Stewart and Amos Miller. He is an Ian Evans Lombe Scholar. He was also given a 2014 Sir John Barbirolli Memorial Foundation Grant, allowing him to purchase a new instrument.
Since coming to the Royal College of Music Ryan has been involved in the Symphony, Philharmonic, Wind and Opera Orchestras, the Swing and Big bands and has also played in the Brass Ensemble and Wind Ensemble. As a member of the Prince Consort Trombone Quartet Ryan has performed in several performances including the open day concert, and prize winners concert, after winning the Brass Ensemble prize in 2015. Furthermore, the quartet has recently retained the brass ensemble prize, and is currently planning to record some music.
Outside of college Ryan has performed with the University of London Symphony Orchestra, the London Young Sinfonia, Arch Sinfonia, Jeff Short Swing Band and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain.
