About Ruth

Award-winning harpist based in Lincolnshire | North East Midlands, providing acoustic/electro-acoustic music in many genres.
Public liability insurance of £1 million

Ruth Lee is an award-winning composer, harpist and vocalist working primarily in acoustic and electro-acoustic music. She is one of the UK Harp Association's Emerging Artists of 2020-2021. A dynamic soloist, who studied with Eleanor Turner, Ruth is a graduate of the University of York (First-Class BA Hons. Music), where she was awarded both The Wilfrid Mellers Prize for Music and a Concerto Award, performing Deborah Henson-Conant’s Soñando en Español with the University of York Chamber Orchestra. Frequently inspired by historical and mythological narratives, her work often fuses folk and contemporary classical musical styles; incorporating loop machines, ambient noise and extended techniques to create a unique sound world. This year, she is looking forward to performing a programme of music featuring her own compositions at the World Harp Congress 2022. Ruth’s original music for solo harp has received several awards, including The Iain Macleòid Young Composer Award 2019, First Prize at The Future Blend Project 2018/19 and First Prize at the Wales Harp Composition Competition 2015. Her broader compositional writing has been workshopped and performed by various soloists and ensembles, most recently being shortlisted for ‘The Night With… Call for Scores 2019’ with the Hermes Experiment. During her studies, her pieces were frequently selected for performance by The Chimera Ensemble, and last year, with the kind support of Salvi Harps, she premiered ‘Reimagined’, a multimedia concert featuring original and contemporary works for electric harp and chamber ensemble, performed by her all-female trio ‘Phantasia’. Whilst in York, she played with the University of York Symphony Orchestra, The Chimera Ensemble and the City of York’s leading chamber orchestra, The Academy of St Olave’s, as well as the Northern Musical Theatre Orchestra, who she continues to perform with. More recently, she was named Runner Up East Coast Musician of the Year and has enjoyed collaborations with The Arc Project in which she premieres new works for harp and voice, alongside composing for other instrumentalists.

Customer questions

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I have played weddings at venues across the North East Midlands, including Lincolnshire's Doddington Hall and Elsham Hall, as well as various churches in Yorkshire. I've also played further afield across the UK, including Oxford. Churches, estates, historic sites or village halls - indoor or outdoor - the harp is a wonderful addition to an event.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I will always try my best to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. Please let me know as soon as possible if there is a slight change to your predicted timings.

How much time do you need to set up?

Ideally, I need 30 minutes before the performance in order to set up and tune. For most settings, playing acoustically will be very effective but in some cases, amplification may be needed. If amplification is needed for your event, I can liaise with you and the venue and provide the equipment needed. This will take slightly longer than the standard time.

Is the transport of your harp included in your quote?

Absolutely - The transport of my harp is included in my quoted travel expenses.

Do you need any equipment provided to play outdoors?

I am happy to play outside but the harp needs to be stood on hard ground, or a flat, firm surface. I will need shelter to perform if it is raining or in direct sunlight as my instrument is valuable and could be damaged. For most settings, playing acoustically will be very effective. In some cases, amplification may be needed - I can provide the equipment.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

I'm happy to discuss the music choices which will best suit the style and tone of your event - my repertoire includes a mixture of classical and contemporary pop and jazz styles.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

If a piece isn't included in my example list there may still be a chance that I already know it. If it's not in my existing repertoire, I can learn up to two requests for your event. If you have further additional requests, then we can discuss an extra fee in order to accommodate for sheet music fees and extra rehearsal time.
