Passionate about music for as long he can remember, 21 year old conductor Ross Gunning is the driving force behind Glasgow Philharmonia. Ross began his musical journey as a percussionist taking lessons every Saturday with Pamella Dow at the junior department of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly the RSAMD) where he recently graduated from fulltime education as an undergraduate student. Ross’ first orchestral experience came when he joined the National Children’s Orchestra of Scotland in 2004 and he hasn’t looked back since, going on to play with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland as well as the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain with whom he appeared on BBC TV as part of the 2012 Proms. The West of Scotland School’s Symphony Orchestra (WSSSO) also played a significant part in his musical education, where Ross took part in side by side events with the RSNO – as well as performing the Rosauro Concerto for Vibraphone as the featured soloist in his final year at the course. Ross’ conducting career has begun to blossom and as well as directing the Glasgow Philharmonia he has recently taken groups such as the Glasgow Orchestral Society, Kelvin Ensemble, Glasgow Schools Symphony Orchestra and Strathclyde University Orchestra under his baton. He has been musical director for the premieres of the stage shows Arabian Nights and The Wolfman, and was the conductor for the Medal unveiling for the Commonwealth Games Launch. He was also the conductor for the Remembrance Day Concert at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in 2013 and has recorded albums with singer/songwriters Karl Loxley and Jonathan Carr. Ross Gunning is a conductor, stage manager, producer and musician whose career has been very diverse. From playing percussion to conducting and stage managing to producing, Ross has worked with many big names in the Performing Arts industry. Ross’ conducting career has begun to blossom. As well as founding and conducting the Glasgow Philharmonia Orchestra, he has recently taken groups such as the Glasgow Orchestral Society, Kelvin Ensemble, Glasgow Schools Symphony Orchestra and Strathclyde University Orchestra under his baton. He has been musical director for the stage show Arabian Nights and The Wolfman, and was the conductor for the Medal unveiling for the Commonwealth Games Launch in 2014. He was stage management for the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony 2014, artist liaison for Pride Glasgow festival 2015 and recorded albums for singer/songwriters. He recently won the Young Scot Arts Award 2015 for his work in Performing Arts.
