Roland Palmer (BMus, MA) is a music producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist currently based in the south of England. Being a classically-trained musician, Roland was first introduced to music by his family, and began playing the cello when he was three years old. From there he began learning the trumpet and started the process of teaching himself the guitar. When he was thirteen, Roland was awarded a Music Scholarship to Canford School in Dorset. Whilst at school he developed his musical abilities, forming several bands and joining many different musical ensembles. He was Principal Cello of the South West Youth Orchestra, first trumpet in the Canford School Jazz Band and sang many solos as a baritone in the Canford School Choir. However, it was during these years that Roland first realised his growing interest in music in its recorded form, and began making his own recordings of his first band. Wanting to further continue his musical training, Roland enrolled on the Music BMus course at The University of Manchester in September 2011. Whilst at university Roland co-founded the band Lesbian Plebian along with three friends, with whom he still plays on a regular basis. During this time he also toured as a multi-instrumentalist in singer-songwriter Chloë Foy‘s band. Whilst in Manchester Roland developed a keen interest in Electro-acoustic composition and orchestration, and furthered his skills as a music producer and sound engineer. He was also Principal Cello of the Manchester University Music Society Symphony Orchestra on several occasions. From there, Roland enrolled at Leeds Beckett University in order to study an MA in Music Production. Here he substantially developed his recording techniques, studio management skills, and learned the subtleties of mixing audio, making several high quality recordings in the process. He continued playing the cello to high standard here, becoming Principal Cello of the Leeds University Union Music Society Symphony Orchestra, and playing the solo part for Saints-Saens’ Cello Concerto No. 1 with the same orchestra. As a guitarist, Roland specialises in rock and experimental genres, but his abilities spread to encompass anything from jazz to pop to country. Although his BMus and MA were largely based on practical skills, Roland also did a great deal of work researching various academic topics within the subject of music. These ranged from an analysis of aspects of noise in music to a discussion on the perception of sound in human hearing. Roland completed his MA in Music Production in September 2015.
