"The first thing you notice about Robert Sutton's music is the songwriting. This man knows a tune..." — Ian Parker, For Folk's Sake I'm a solo acoustic singer-guitarist based in Lancashire, performing at weddings, parties, pubs, bars and private events across the North West. My sets are built around songs people already know and love, but often played a little differently. Expect Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, The Beatles and Frankie Goes to Hollywood alongside Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, The Verve and Foo Fighters, plus soul and blues from artists such as Al Green and Jimi Hendrix. I also love taking less obvious choices from pop, R&B and dance music and reworking them for solo acoustic guitar, so a set can move from something gentle and intimate to something much more upbeat and recognisable without losing its acoustic character. I've been writing, arranging and performing music for many years, and original material is still an important part of what I do. My influences include Damien Rice, Jeff Buckley and Ben Harper, which gives my playing a warm, expressive and intimate quality — particularly suited to weddings, drinks receptions and occasions where the music needs to create atmosphere without taking over the room. Performance highlights include Didsbury Arts Festival and Mannifest on the Isle of Man, alongside venues across Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire and more recent private functions around the North West. One of the most important things I've learned from playing live is how to read the room. A wedding drinks reception or relaxed afternoon might call for gentle Beatles and singer-songwriter material; later in the evening, I can move towards bigger songs that people want to sing along with. I don't believe in delivering exactly the same set regardless of the occasion. For weddings, I'm always happy to discuss favourite songs or learn a special request in advance so the music feels personal to your day. I offer solo acoustic sets and take a friendly, professional and straightforward approach to every booking. I'll make sure everything's agreed in advance so you know exactly what to expect. If you're looking for live acoustic music that feels warm, familiar and relaxed, but a little different from the standard acoustic set, I'd love to be part of your event.

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Not a problem. Events rarely run exactly to plan, so I'm used to a bit of flexibility on the day. If timings shift in the run up, just let me know as early as you can and we'll sort it.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, happy to. If I'm bringing my own speaker I can run a playlist before I start and during the break, so there's never an awkward silence. You're welcome to send me a playlist beforehand, or I can put something together to suit the mood of the event. No extra charge.

How much time do you need to set up?

Around 30 to 45 minutes before I'm due to start, and I like to arrive a bit earlier than that where possible. It's just me, a guitar and a small PA, so setting up is quick and unobtrusive. Packing down afterwards takes about 20 minutes.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

If there are songs you'd love to hear, or any you'd rather I avoided, just let me know. I'll usually suggest a running order too, based on what tends to work at different points in an evening.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes. I bring my guitar, a PA speaker and microphone, so everything needed for the performance is covered. All I need from the venue is access to a plug socket and a bit of space to set up. If the venue already has a sound system I'm happy to use that instead.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes, happy to. If there's a song that means something to you, let me know as far ahead as you can so I can learn it properly. There's a £30 charge per song to cover the rehearsal time. If you'd like more than one or two, just get in touch and we'll have a chat.
