Richard Bignall was born in London and completed his postgraduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama under the tutelage of John Evans, graduating in 2016 with first-class honours.
Recent operatic roles include ‘MacDuff’ Macbeth (Glyndebourne Jerwood Opera; Linbury Theatre, ROH), 'Servant' Cendrillon and 'Une Bête' L'Enfant et les Sortilèges (Glyndebourne Festival Opera), ‘Demetrius’ The Enchanted Island (British Youth Opera), cover ‘Flute’ A Midsummer Night's Dream, ‘Scaramuccio’ Ariadne Auf Naxos, and ‘Delmiro’ Hipermestra (all Glyndebourne Festival Opera), Diener 6 and cover Italian Tenor Capriccio, Dr Caius Falstaff (Garsington Opera) and the title role in the world premiere of The Tale of Januarie (GSMD)
Concert experience includes semi-chorus for Berlioz’s Romeo and Juliet with the LSO under Valery Gergiev, a rare performance of Cardew’s Ode Machines in the Southbank’s ‘The Rest is Noise’ Festival, the world premieres of Noel Mewton-Wood’s recently-discovered songs and recitals in St. Martin-in-the-Fields and South Hill Park. He has also performed in masterclasses with Neil Schicoff, Sarah Walker, Toby Spence, Mary Dunleavy and Neil Jenkins.
Oratorio experience includes Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, Bach’s Magnificat, Handel’s Israel in Egypt, Dixit Dominus, and Messiah, Charpentier's Te Deum, Schubert’s Mass in G Major, Haydn’s Imperial ‘Nelson’ Mass, Mendelssohn’s Lauda Sion, and chorus in Jonathan Miller’s production of St. Matthew’s Passion in the National Theatre. Richard has also sung multiple times on BBC Radio 3, in the BBC Proms and is the winner of the 2014/15 Guildhall English Song Award.
