About Plump Hill Band

The Plump Hill Barn Dance & Ceilidh band offer you over twenty five years' experience of playing for dances.
Ceilidh band
Gloucestershire
Public liability insurance of £5 million

We play for weddings, anniversaries, Burns nights, parties, local celebrations, school events, conferences, and much more. We play throughout our home area of the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire and Wye Valley, and are happy to travel to the Cotswolds, the Welsh Marches, South Wales, the Severn Valley, the Midlands and sometimes beyond. We are as content in a village hall as in a large specialist venue. Currently, we perform as either a two-piece band (recorders and keyboard) or a three-piece band (recorders, rhythm guitar and bass guitar), plus our caller. We think we have a very distinctive line-up. We are primarly an English Dance Band, and instead of fiddle or melodeon, we use flute/recorders for the melody. This gives us a mellow sound, the kind of thing you might have heard played for dances in Austen adaptations! But the addition of bass and guitar or keyboard brings our sound up to date, and provides plenty of energy to get everyone up on their feet and dancing. Do please have a listen to us and see what you think. Note that our video and audio clips are of recorder/flute, guitar and bass. Our other line-up, with recorder/flute and keyboard, is a similar sound, but slightly more traditional. Oh, and the band’s name celebrates an old settlement in the Forest of Dean, not the (mostly) svelte shapes of the band!

Plump Hill Band were excellent - the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Those who didn't choose to dance loved listening to the live music and watching all the fun and laughter of those who did.

Customer questions

Can you perform covers?

We an an instrumental folk group, so do not do covers as such. But if you have any particular tunes you would like played, just let us know.

Do you have different line-up options?

We have two line-ups: 3-piece, consisting of flute/recorder, keyboard, and caller 4-piece, consisting of flute/recorder, rhythm guitar, bass, and caller. Our 3-piece line-up is suitable for smaller venues such as village halls. Our 4-piece line-up is more suitable for larger venues and weddings.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

If timings change slightly, that is not a problem. If you want to change day, or move from an afternoon to an evening event (or vice versa!), we will try and accomodate you, but can't promise to be available.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes. We always bring our own music which can be played between sets. We can also connect a phone to our PA system as long as it has a headphone socket, to play your music. And we can also play any tracks or Spotify lists that you send us in advance.

How much time do you need to set up?

One hour.

Do you provide a caller?

Yes, our experienced caller is part of our group - guaranteed to get everyone up and dancing! If you only want background music and not a caller, that is not a problem - just let us know and we will reduce our fee accordingly.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Yes and no. We play tunes that are appropriate for the particular dances. However, if there is a tune you would like performed, either for a dance or between dances, please let us know and we will find a way to make it work!

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA) included in your quote?

Yes.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Yes. If there is a particular folk tune you would like played, just let us know (preferably with a bit of notice!) and we will learn it for you.
