Pete Yelding is a cellist, sitarist and vocalist from a family of travelling Showpeople. He is a student of Ustad Irfan Muhammad Khan, the Khalif (chief) of an illustrious musical lineage of North Indian Classical instrumentalists known as the Lucknow Shahjahanpur Gharana. This lineage is known for its rousing compositions and intricate presentations of raga in an older instrumental style known as Gat-Toda. As well as being one of only a small number of contemporary sitarists to perform in this particular stirring style of Hindustani music, Pete is the only musician to have ever translated its compositions and improvisation techniques onto cello. As well as the usual bands and orchestras, Pete grew up playing cello with West African Griots with whom he made lifetime friends at fairs and festivals he attended on site-crew with his mum. He was awarded a scholarship to study composition and cello at Birmingham Conservatoire in 2008. In his first term he was introduced to Hindustani music and the sitar by visiting sitarist Clem Alford. Over the next 10 years, alongside Pete's many creative projects that included songwriting, interdisciplinary and theatrical collaborations and developing a wide improvising palette on cello, Pete studied and honed his sitar technique and understanding of Raga. He received sitar tuition from Jonathan Mayer and some vocal tuition from Rauf Saami of the famous Qawwals, the Saami Brothers. Then in 2019 he was introduced to his Ustad, Irfan Muhammad Khan, whose musical style he has since adopted to perform with today. Over his professional career Pete has collaborated with artists such as Zinzi Minott, Mammal Hands, Iqbal Khan, Talvin Singh, Sura Susso, Jonathan Mayer, Hanif Khan, Shagufta Iqbal, & Amadou Diagne; and organisations such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, Bristol Old Vic, Cape Farewell, Birmingham REP & SAMA Arts.

He was absolutely spectacular - he was professional when we were initially in contact to talk through the details of the day, and our guests were absolutely wowed by his performance. Thank you so much for making our day special, and we hope to have you again in the future

I first met Pete Yelding a few years ago at WOMAD festival. He was performing after me in the Coyote Moon tent, and I sat on the floor during his set absolutely mesmerised by his interpretations of Hindustani Raga to the cello. Between each carefully selected piece, he engaged the audience in an unflinching discussion of Indian modal scales, postcolonial power dynamics and his own heritage as the grandchild of travelling Showpeople. It was impressive, not least because he offered by far the most detailed and direct analysis of ‘world music’ forms learned (or adopted) by white musicians that I heard anywhere onsite during that whole weekend.

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I will always try my best to accommodate slight changes to timings, as long as I have enough notice to plan my travel and the amount of time you want me to play doesn’t change. If you want me to play longer once you have booked me, I can discuss the extra cost with you.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Between sets I usually play a playlist of Indian Classical music through the PA to maintain the vibe of the event, unless requested that there is no music between sets.

How much time do you need to set up?

I usually set up between 1 to 1.5 hours.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

If there is a particular raga you love, please ask. However, I usually choose ragas that suit the time of day, season and mood of the occasion, drawing from a wide repertoire of often not widely known material, bringing unexpected magic to the occasion.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

All I need is access to a power source within 10 metres of where I perform. I will set up the rest.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

We can discuss this, but my preference is to play Ragas in the classical style, as this is my area of specialty. I tend not to play Bollywood or Pop songs.
