Pedro Merchán Correas is a fourth year student at the Royal College of Music, supported by an ABRSM award for the entire duration of his studies, by the Martin Musical Scholarship Fund in his third and fourth years, the Macklin Bursary in his fourth year and winner of the President's Award. He is coursing a Joint Principal Study programme in bassoon, taught by Andrea di Flammineis and Julie Price, and composition with Michael Oliva. Pedro started to play the bassoon at the age of eight when he entered the ‘Centro Integrado de Enseñanzas Musicales Padre Antonio Soler’ in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid, Spain, where he studied until the age of eighteen. On graduating he moved to London to attend at the RCM to start his undergraduate studies. He has taken part in different orchestral projetcs at College including Symphony, Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras and the Variable Geometry ensemble, and around London; in addition to a recent solo recital at the Foundling Museum. Also he has taken part as a composer in the series of workshops ‘Contemporary Music in Creation’ where he premiered his ‘drum and bass’ inspired piece last year; and the series of concerts ‘From the Soundhouse’, where he premiered last February his latest piece “†.7 KAOS Estudio de electrónica nº5” for ensemble, soloist electronics and performance, strongly influenced by techno. Currently he is composing the next in the series of his KAOS pieces which will be premiered in a “From the Soundhouse” concert in 2016, and performing bassoon in ensembles and as a soloist.
