About Paul
Paul Reeves studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Rudolf Piernay. There then followed a year at the National Opera Studio sponsored by The Richard Lewis Award (Glyndebourne), The Sybil Tutton Trust and The John Wates Trust. After leaving college Paul sang Publio (La Clemenza di Tito) for Glyndebourne Touring Opera and created the role of Matthew in Harrison Birtwistle’s The Last Supper. He repeated this role at the Staatsoper Berlin under the baton of Daniel Barenboim and at the Royal Festival Hall and Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Over the past ten years Paul has sung the following roles at English National Opera: Sparaficuile and Ceprano (Rigoletto), Somnus (Semele), Pistol (Sir John in Love), Basilio (Barber of Seville), Colline (La Boheme) Publio (La Clemenza di Tito). At Welsh National Opera, Paul sang Colline (La Boheme), Basilio (Barber), the Parson and Badger (Cunning Little Vixen) and Zebul in Jeptha (Handel). At Opera North Paul sang the Bass Soloist in Les Noces (Stravinsky), Sparafucile (Rigoletto) and Hobson (Peter Grimes). For Scottish Opera, Paul performed the roles of Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Sarastro (The Magic Flute), Gremin (Eugene Onegin) and Dikoi (Katya Kabanova) At the Royal Opera House, Paul sang in The Seven Deadly Sins (Weil) the role of the Mother with the Royal Ballet. He has also taken part in works performed in the Linbury Theatre, including Babette’s Feast (John Browne) The Shops (Edward Ruston and The Birds (Braunfels). For the Bergenzfestspiele Paul has sung the Doctor and Banker in the premiere of American Lulu (Neuwirt) and Rodger in The Shops (Rushton). For Opera Holland Park Paul sang Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Wurm in Luisa Miller (Verdi), Zuniga in Carmen, Samuel in un Ballo in Maschera (Verdi) and Angelotti in Tosca. With Garsington Opera Paul sang Clark in a May Night (Rimski-Korsakov) and for Longborough Festival, the Doctor in La Traviata. At the Royal Albert Hall, Paul sang The King in Aida for Raymond Gubbay. Abroad, Paul sang Zuniga (Carmen) for Tenerife Opera, Bass in Mozart Requiem (Staged) for Tel Aviv Opera, Olsen in Street Scene (Weil) for Theater an der Wien, Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona), Théâtre du Châtelet and Toulon Opera. For Wexford Festival Paul sang Mr Gobineau in The Medium (Menotti) and Fiesque in Maria di Rohan (Donizetti). For the final Anna Livia Festival in Dublin, Paul sang Abimelech in Samson et Dalila and Death in Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Ullmann) For The Opera Group, Paul has created many roles in new works which have been performed at festivals all over Europe and often broadcast and recorded. He started singing with the company at its inception and worked closely with them until one of their final productions (Street Scene) in 2013. Currently Paul is singing extracts from the roles of Wotan, Hagen, Fafner and Alberich in a condensed staged version of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen at The Charing Cross Theatre in London. He sings regularly in concert, including the World Première of The Water Diviner’s Tale (Rachel Portman) for the BBC Proms, Beethoven Choral Symphony with Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Mozart Requiem with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Verdi Requiem at London’s Royal Albert Hall and Christmas Concerts with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He also regularly performs concerts and recitals as well as Television performances in German speaking countries.
