Paul Emmett is an East Midlands-based composer, arranger, orchestrator and musician, creating bespoke music for ensembles, schools, choirs, weddings, theatre projects, film, personal commissions and special occasions. His work is shaped by a simple idea: music should feel personal, purposeful and playable. Whether writing a short piece for a wedding ceremony, arranging a favourite song for a special event, creating music for a school ensemble, or composing a new work for a community group, Paul focuses on the people behind the project and the performers who will bring the music to life. Paul writes for a wide range of forces, from solo instruments and voice to choirs, wind bands, orchestras, chamber groups and mixed ensembles. He has particular experience working with amateur, youth and community musicians, creating music that feels rewarding to perform without being needlessly difficult. His background as a conductor, teacher, trombonist and pianist means he understands what works in rehearsal and what performers need from clear, practical music. He aims to write music that sounds effective, fits the players, and supports the purpose of the occasion. As an arranger and orchestrator, Paul can adapt existing music for different ensembles, ability levels and events. This might include a special song for a wedding, a favourite piece arranged for school musicians, a medley for a concert, or a practical version of a work for the exact players available. Paul’s composing work covers concert pieces, choral music, instrumental works, educational pieces and music connected to personal stories. He is interested in music that communicates clearly and gives performers a strong reason to play it. Clients can expect a collaborative process. Paul will discuss the purpose of the music, the performers involved, the required difficulty level, the deadline, and the finished materials needed. He can also provide audio examples, rehearsal notes, programme notes and revisions where appropriate. Paul’s wider musical work has taken him to venues including Belvoir Castle, Lincoln Castle, Harlaxton Manor, Oakham Castle and St Paul’s Cathedral. His experience across composing, conducting, arranging and teaching gives him a practical, flexible approach to every project. If you need a new piece, a personal arrangement, a concert item, a school ensemble work, or music shaped around a particular story, Paul can help turn the idea into something clear, performable and meaningful.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Clients value that the music is written by a real person, for real people. I create personal, human-made music shaped around the performers, the occasion and the story behind the project, not generic or AI-generated material.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

My work has been performed and developed in a range of settings, from community concerts and schools to larger professional contexts. Highlights include working with the BBC Concert Orchestra, alongside projects at venues such as Nottingham Royal Concert Hall.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

My influences include Benjamin Britten, Vaughan Williams, Holst, John Williams, Thomas Newman, Arvo Pärt and Eric Whitacre, alongside songwriters such as The Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Billy Joel, Elton John and Ben Folds.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

A major highlight was working with the BBC Concert Orchestra, but I also value community projects, including arrangements for Sleaford Concert Band and writing music for Lincolnshire Music Festival massed choir events.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I always try to be flexible where possible. If your deadline, performance date or project schedule changes, let me know as soon as you can. I’ll do my best to adjust the work plan and keep the project on track.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

This usually is not relevant for composing or arranging bookings. For live events, I can discuss walk-in music, backing tracks, audio files, cue music or recorded material if your project needs it.

How much time do you need to set up?

For composition and arrangement work, setup time means planning time. I will need details of the occasion, ensemble, instruments, ability level, deadline, preferred style, and any existing music or ideas you want included.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Yes. For composing and arranging work, you can choose the piece, song, style, theme or starting idea. I can also help shape the music if you are not sure what will work best for the performers or occasion.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes. I use my own composing, arranging and score-writing setup. For live performance, printing or recording needs, we can discuss what is required and whether performers, venue equipment or extra resources are needed.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Yes. I can work with specific pieces, songs, themes or musical references. For arrangements, copyright and permissions may need to be considered depending on the music, use, and performance setting.
