Verified profile

One Jump Ahead always attract dancers to get up and strut their stuff with their huge repertoire of 1940s - 50s Swing/Jive and Rhythm & Blues, plus Great American Songbook, Rat Pack, 1960s Soul, Rock'n'Roll and carefully selected vintage Pop plus a large number of their own critically acclaimed songs. Leader, singer, saxophonist and songwriter Kit Packham is accompanied by piano, guitar, bass, drums, trumpet and another saxophone. The swinging tempos, sizzling sax solos and humour of jump/jive star Louis Jordan have been the band's biggest influence and have inspired Kit to compose his own, critically acclaimed material. At private functions the band usually concentrate on well-known “covers”, but at clubs, festivals and dances audiences can expect more original compositions - or some of Kit's wry updated lyrics to jazz standards.

Customer questions

Will the singer be the same as who I see in the videos?

Absolutely! The singer is also the bandleader so he'll always be fronting the band (unless perhaps some alternative arrangement has been made by prior agreement with you). Other members of the band may be busy elsewhere at times so we do then use a trusted musician of the same high standard to deputise rather than disappoint a client by cancelling.

Do you have different line-up options?

Yes, while our default format is as a septet, we've performed in almost every conceivable variation from those 7 components! Right down to a duo (usually piano + vocal/sax) and various forms of trio, quartet, quintet and sextet. (Kit even performs solo with backing tracks!)

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We'll always be reasonably flexible both in the planning stage and on the night. Small changes are very unlikely to be a problem. Significant changes should always be checked with us but may well be accommodated without fuss, too.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

We're happy to provide recorded music between our sets (and often before or afterwards) which can be your own playlists or ours. However, we don't provide a full DJ service. We prefer to make our own music!

How much time do you need to set up?

In most cases about an hour, although we like to allow 90 minutes whenever possible. If we're performing in a smaller format than our full 7-piece it's usually quicker. If access and/or space is limited or difficult it will make it harder to set up quickly.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

We very much welcome your input to what we should include in our sets. Let us know any "must haves" and which of our songs are your favourites and we'll build our sets around them. It's better to allow us to plan the running order rather than to try and micro-manage it yourself, although we'll obviously open with your requested first dance at a wedding.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

We assume that you want us to bring our own PA and lights unless you tell us any different. For some events, these may be being provided by a third party. As long as we know in advance what's expected, we'll come prepared!

Can you learn song requests before the event?

We may already know it, even if it isn't on or repertoire list. Provided that it's not a last-minute booking we're usually happy to prepare a song or two that we've not played before free of charge.

We were absolutely delighted with one jump ahead . Kit and his band were extremely professional and helpful from the very beginning . Our son and daughter in law had a wonderful day and I put that down to the uplifting and easy listening jazz that put a smile on everyone’s face. My sister in law commented that when the music started the whole mood of the wedding party was uplifted . We loved the music and the three sets pulled the whole afternoon seamlessly together. Wonderful! Thank you one jump ahead .

One Jump Ahead were everything we could possibly have wanted in a wedding band and more!! Communication before the day was great- Kit designed a bespoke set list for us and even took the time to edit things to suit how we wanted the night to play out. On the night they instantly lifted the mood, had everyone up dancing and really interacted with us- some band members even signed our guest book! We loved how every musician showcased their talents with solo sections, but mostly how they all came together to give us an unforgettable performance. Thank you so much to the entire band for making our wedding reception unforgettable- I don’t think I left the dance floor all night! :)

fantastic, great musicians and a great repertoire. Everybody loved them. They were also very nice people, the party was in the garden and we had to deal with intermittent rain but they just coped with everything with great good humour. They were really part of the party. We’d certainly engage them again and would strongly recommend them to anyone looking for their kind of music.
