We are an Edinburgh-based guitar and vocal duo with a shared passion for bringing soul, R&B, jazz and acoustic pop to life through live performance. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys, we perform music that combines timeless classics with modern favourites, creating the perfect atmosphere for restaurants, bars, private events and intimate venues.
Our journey as a duo began while studying Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. Although engineering occupies our weekdays, music has always been at the heart of who we are. What started as regular performances at the renowned Whistle Binkies open mic nights quickly grew into paid opportunities, including performances at Brewhemia, where we developed the ability to entertain diners while creating the right balance of atmosphere and engagement. These experiences taught us how to read a room, adapt our set to suit the audience and deliver polished performances in a professional setting.
As a vocalist from Aberdeen, I (Liya) have been singing for as long as I can remember. From the age of four, I regularly competed in classical singing competitions, achieving numerous placing positions that helped develop both my vocal technique and confidence as a performer. Alongside singing, I have studied piano for nine years and was awarded ABRSM Grade 8 Piano with Distinction. This musical background has given me a strong understanding of musicianship and performance, allowing me to bring both technical ability and genuine emotion to every song.
Matthew, originally from Dunfermline, has been playing guitar since the age of 13. His distinctive playing style blends jazz-influenced harmony with funky rhythmic guitar, giving familiar songs a fresh and sophisticated feel. His musical development led to the honour of performing in front of King Charles III and members of the Royal Family during the official celebrations marking Dunfermline's new city status, an experience that reflects both his musicianship and professionalism.
One of the biggest highlights of our journey came during our year abroad at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). There, we expanded from a duo into a full band, performing alongside a drummer and bassist at fraternity parties and university events. We also performed at a music showcase organised by UCLA's Department of Music, giving us experience entertaining both high-energy crowds and attentive concert audiences. Performing in such diverse environments strengthened our versatility and confidence, reinforcing the importance of adapting every performance to suit the venue and audience.
Today, we continue to perform throughout Edinburgh and beyond, always striving to create memorable live experiences. Whether providing laid-back background music in a restaurant, setting the mood in a cocktail bar, or performing for a special event, we combine technical musicianship, professionalism and a genuine love for live music. Every performance is carefully prepared, every audience is different, and we believe that's what makes live music so rewarding.
