Acoustic duo
Edinburgh

We’re an Edinburgh-based guitar and vocal duo with a shared passion for live music and a repertoire spanning soul, funk, R&B, Motown, acoustic pop, jazz, indie, soft rock and modern chart favourites. Our live performance experience, expertise in our instrument, and ability to connect with an audience has enabled us to consistently deliver engaging performances that resonate with audiences of all ages and music tastes. We bring energy, authenticity and enthusiasm to every performance, while knowing how to read a room and shape the music around it. Our repertoire is deliberately diverse, and by moving seamlessly between genres, we keep the audience engaged and the momentum going. We can create a relaxed atmosphere with foot-tappers such as 'Just the Two of Us', 'Stand by Me' and 'Valerie', then turn up the energy for a crowded bar with crowd favourites like 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody', 'Mr Brightside' and 'Ain’t No Mountain High Enough'. We can set a romantic mood with 'Careless Whisper' and 'Thinking Out Loud', bring the funk with 'I Want You Back' and 'Hit the Road Jack', or move into modern pop with songs such as 'Pink Pony Club' and 'Umbrella'. We our own twist on familiar music to keep them fresh and memorable without losing the moments that make people want to sing along. Our musical journey began while studying Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. What started with regular performances at WhistleBinkies open mic nights quickly developed into paid opportunities, including performances at Brewhemia and Ghillie Dhu. These experiences gave us a strong understanding of what it takes to perform professionally in different environments: being engaging when the room wants energy, understated when the music needs to sit in the background, and adaptable enough to respond to the audience in front of us. We each bring a strong musical foundation to the duo. Liya has been singing from an early age and developed her vocal technique through classical singing competitions. Matthew has played guitar since the age of 13, developing a distinctive style that combines jazz-influenced harmony with funky rhythmic playing. We’ve also performed in a wide range of settings, from intimate venues and restaurants to large university events and high-energy parties. During a year abroad at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), we expanded into a band with drums and bass, performing at university events, private parties and a showcase organised by UCLA’s Department of Music. Today, we continue to perform throughout Edinburgh and beyond, always striving to create memorable live experiences. Whether providing laid-back background music in a restaurant, setting the mood in a cocktail bar, or performing for a special event, we combine technical musicianship, personality and a genuine love for live music. Every performance is carefully prepared, every audience is different, and we believe that's what makes live music so rewarding.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Our clients love our versatility, song choices and stage presence. We carefully tailor our sets to suit each event, mixing classic favourites with modern hits and different genres, so there’s something for everyone in the room. We also make sure our performances feel engaging, lively and suited to the atmosphere of the event.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

We’ve performed at a range of venues and events, including Whistlebinkies, Brewhemia and Ghillie Dhu in Edinburgh, as well as private birthday parties and university events. On our year abroad at the University of California, Los Angeles, we performed at fraternity parties and a musical showcase organised by the university’s music club.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

We’ve been influenced by a wide range of artists, particularly Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys. Their incredible musicianship, songwriting, groove and stage presence have all been a big inspiration to us and influence the energy and style we bring to our performances.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

One of our most high-profile performances was in California, where we formed a full band with the addition of a drummer and bassist, to open a party concert for the Californian band 'Sunroom'. It was a fantastic opportunity to perform as a larger ensemble and open the event for an established touring act.

Do you have different line-up options?

Currently, our only line-up is the guitar-vocal duo. However, we’re very musically versatile and can tailor our set to the room, covering pop, soul, funk, Motown, R&B, jazz, disco, indie rock and more- from classic favourites to modern hits, appealing to audiences of all ages and musical tastes.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We understand that timings can sometimes change. If your schedule changes after booking, just let us know as soon as possible and we’ll always do our best to accommodate the new timings. If we’re unable to make the revised timings work, we’ll be happy to help you find a suitable alternative act.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

We don’t currently provide an iPod/DJ service, as we don’t have our own PA system. However, we’re happy to work with the venue’s existing sound system or a separate DJ/PA provider for music before and between our sets.

How much time do you need to set up?

We typically need around 10–15 minutes to set up and complete a sound check. This allows us to make sure everything is working properly and the sound is balanced, so we can deliver the highest-quality performance possible.

Can you roam around while you perform?

Yes, absolutely! We’re happy to move around and interact with the audience while performing, where the venue layout allows. We can adapt our positioning to suit the space and atmosphere, helping to create a more engaging and lively experience.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Absolutely! We’ve provided a set list of around 160 songs for you to choose from. You’re welcome to pick your favourites in advance, and we’ll do our best to tailor the set to your preferences and the atmosphere of your event.

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

No, PA and lighting equipment are not included in our quote. We are a guitar-vocal duo and don’t currently provide our own PA system or lighting. We’re happy to work with the venue’s existing equipment or a separate sound/lighting provider.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Absolutely! We’re happy to learn up to three song requests for your event. Just let us know your choices in advance so we have plenty of time to prepare and make sure we can deliver them to the best of our ability.
