Percussionist
Maldon

For me, percussion is about more than simply playing an instrument. It’s about listening to the music, understanding the feel of a room and adding something that complements what is already happening. I particularly enjoy performing alongside DJs and musicians, where live percussion can add another dimension to the music and create a more engaging experience for the audience. My main styles are house, funk, soul and Latin, although I enjoy working across different musical styles. I play bongos, congas, cajón and other percussion, adapting my playing to suit the music and the atmosphere of the event. I’m not looking to take over the music — I’m there to enhance it, add energy and contribute to the overall experience. My experience has developed through performing live and working with other musicians and DJs in professional event environments. Over time I’ve built up a good understanding of how to perform as part of an event rather than simply as a musician playing a set. Reading the room, responding to the music and knowing when to add energy — and when to hold back — are all important parts of what I do. I take the professional side of performing seriously too. I provide my own equipment where required, including microphones and stands, and aim to make things straightforward for organisers and other performers. I arrive prepared, understand the importance of working well with other people and always want the performance to fit naturally into the event. What I enjoy most is seeing the reaction when live percussion becomes part of the music. A rhythm can change the feel of a track, lift the atmosphere and give people something they weren't expecting. Those moments are what make performing worthwhile for me. I’m continually developing as a percussionist and looking for opportunities to perform, work with great musicians and DJs, and bring live percussion to more events. Whether I’m adding subtle groove to a live performance or bringing extra energy to a DJ set, my aim is always the same: to play well, work professionally and make a positive contribution to the event. Nick's Song list

This isn’t a setlist or a fixed repertoire — I’m not a “know every song off by heart” kind of musician!
My style is highly improvisational. I listen to what’s being played and create my percussion part around it in real time, adapting to the DJ, your playlist and the atmosphere of the event.
I work across a wide range of music, including:
House & dance
Disco
Funk & soul
Latin & salsa
Reggae & Caribbean
Soca & calypso
Afro / global grooves
Middle Eastern & belly-dance styles
Bollywood & world music
The list above is a guide to the musical territory I enjoy working in, rather than a limit to what I can play. If it makes you move, I can probably find a groove in it.
Where your body flows, I add the surf.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Clients seem to love the energy and spontaneity I bring. I improvise around the music being played, listening and responding in the moment rather than following a fixed routine. Every performance is a little different, and I think that’s part of the appeal — it feels natural, live and genuine.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Hilton Syon Park and a number of notable clubs, as well as private house parties, weddings, club nights and other private and professional events.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

I’m more interested in the recipes than the chefs. I take inspiration from Latin and funk, the rhythm and energy of 70s disco, and the way those grooves have found their way into modern house and dance music. I’m interested in what makes a rhythm work and how I can take those ideas and make them my own through live percussion.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Probably Hilton Syon Park.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let me know as soon as possible. Thank you.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Typically, the DJ will have the setlist ready for your event, or you can provide a playlist you’ve curated for the night. I’m also happy to help put a playlist together if needed.

How much time do you need to set up?

20 minutes set up time will be perfect.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

My role is to play along with whatever tracks the DJ puts on or whatever’s on your playlist — so absolutely, go for it! I’ll listen, adapt and play to the music.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, I provide my own equipment. I typically perform with an acoustic setup that I bring myself. If microphones and stands are required through a PA system, this can also be arranged for larger audiences and venues. Just let me know what you need and I’ll be happy to discuss the setup.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

My style is highly improvisational, so I don’t generally need to learn songs note-for-note. I listen and build my percussion around the music in real time, adapting to the track, groove and atmosphere. If there are particular songs or moments you’d like, I’m happy to listen beforehand and get familiar with them.
