Harpist
Cardiff

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, London, Nia is an award winning harpist based in Wales. She is currently undertaking her postgraduate degree as a scholarship holder at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, under the tutelage of Caryl Thomas. Prior to her studies in Cardiff, she studied with Catherine White. Classically trained, Nia is available for weddings, events, functions, concerts and tuition, and is in high demand as both soloist and ensemble player. Originally from Pontarddulais, Nia started lessons at the age of eight at her Welsh language primary school. She soon went on to study with Meinir Heulyn, former principal harp of the WNO. A keen soloist and competitor, Nia recently won the bronze medal at the 5th Hong Kong International Harp Competition. During her time at RAM, her success was reflected in her winning numerous awards and prizes, including the Frank Britton award, being highly commended in the Skaila Kanga Harp Prize and commended in the Guy Magrath Harp Prize, and being twice recipient of the Olive Jenkins Memorial Bursary. Nia is passionate about the vital role of the harp in Welsh culture and has a keen interest in exploring the capabilities of the national instrument. Her national achievements in her home country include winning the televised Gwyl Cerdd Dant under 25 harp solo in 2015, following her earlier success in the under 16 solo in 2011. Nia recently gave the premier performance of Branwen, a concerto for harp and brass band composed especially for her with the Pontarddulais Town Band. Nia has played in numerous masterclasses in both London and in Wales with world renowned harpists, including Isabelle Perrin, Isabelle Moretti, Catrin Finch, Milda Agazarian, Sylvain Blassel, Anne-Sophie Bertrand, Lavinia Meijer and Gwyneth Wentink. An avid orchestral player from a young age, Nia became a member of the NCO Main Orchestra 2011, and was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales from 2015 to 2019, taking on the role as co-principal harpist from 2017. She has since played as principal harpist in the RAM Symphony Orchestra, RAM Musical Theatre Orchestra, RAM Opera, and most recently with both chamber orchestra and Opera orchestra of RWCMD. She has performed with world-renowned conductors such as Ed Gardner, Sir Mark Elder, Carlo Rizzi, Andrew Litton, Paul Daniel and Marin Alsop. Nia has performed at major concert venues throughout the UK including London’s Southbank Centre and St John’s Smith Square, and numerous times at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall, where she recently lead four harps in Mahler’s fifth symphony with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. During her studies at RAM, she performed in various harp ensembles at venues including Regent Hall, Duke’s Hall, Charlton House, David Josefowitz Recital Hall and the Angela Burgess Hall, and achieved success with her harp duo at the National Eisteddfod in 2018 and the North London Festival of Music, Speech and Drama. Since commencing her studies at Cardiff, she has formed a flute and harp duo, which she enjoys regularly performing with. Nia would like to acknowledge the generous support of the Olive Jenkins Memorial Bursary, the Ryan Davies Memorial Fund, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, and the Thomas and Elizabeth Williams Scholarship.
