I am a freelance music teacher with brass and woodwind specialism. I also teach beginner guitar, piano and drum lessons. I have experience teaching individual, group, and whole class lessons for children of primary and secondary school age. I also run classes and a wind ensemble for adults. I accept beginner to advanced levels in the study of the cornet, trumpet, baritone and trombone though would consider tutoring students on other high and low brass instruments. Woodwind lessons cater for beginner levels. My tuition extends to music theory and beginner piano. I am currently self-employed. I have previously run year round whole class recorder lessons for year 3 in one primary school and have operated as a Music Coordinator within another primary school, where I taught Foundation Years Music, whole class recorder and whole class brass lessons to children in year groups 2 to 6. As a result, I have developed my own series of whole class lessons. This year I am gaining further accreditation for my work and embarking on a PCGEi in Group Tuition. As part of my current work, I am a peripatetic tutor, running lessons within and outside of schools for children from years 2 to year 13. I teach individual, group and whole class music lessons for children of primary and secondary school age. Content caters for beginner to advanced levels. I teach most woodwind and brass instruments and beginner guitar, piano and drums. I also teach adults. I have performed in orchestras, pit orchestras and run several ensembles. I currently regularly play with a local band called, The Soul Skunks. From September, 2014, I was a County Music Group Tutor at Five Valleys Music Centre in Stroud, where I conducted and arranged music for an adult wind band and took senior theory classes. I previously ran the junior orchestra. I was also the brass specialist for First Access tuition (now called, Gifted and Talented tuition), where I guided groups of children or adults through a crash course in learning an instrument for the first time. In addition, I was a Whole Class Ensemble Tutor (WCET), as part of Gloucestershire Music. I taught a successful scheme of work to primary school children on a 10, 20 or 30 week programme. I delivered whole class brass lessons to classes of children throughout the county, developing experience working with school from a range of backgrounds.

Neil Southgate has been a wonderful brass teacher for my class. He is not only kind, and very patient, but he inspires the children to enjoy learning and to love music. Neil is an excellent teacher, always calm and prepared. His organisation of lessons is totally reliable. Neil's talent for teaching is evident: it can be seen in the lessons where the children participate with great focus and excitement; it is evident when he worked with a whole class aged from 6 to 9, managing to engage them all; he gently encourages practice, attention to details and dynamics all in a fun and relaxed learning environment. He shows a genuine interest in each child and the value they gain from the sessions whilst covering all the musical elements needed to make progress. My class has looked forward to their brass lessons and it has become the highlight of the week! I would recommend Neil to anyone needing a brass teacher.

Neil is an incredible teacher and has hugely improved my playing, both from warming up to more effective ways of playing; there really is all you could want. His teaching is fun, too.
