May is currently a postgraduate scholarship student studying at the Royal College of Music, with Jonathan Barritt, having graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2015. She began learning the violin aged three, tutored by Glyn Parfitt. Aged 9, she moved over to the viola and continued her studies with a full scholarship to the Purcell School of Music from 2004, under Ian Jewel. She was awarded the Arthur Felsenstein Award in 2009, and played in the National Youth Orchestra from 2009-2011 leaving as principal viola. May has always been a keen chamber musician performing numerous times at the Wigmore Hall alongside the NASH ensemble, and with her own ensemble, the Cavatina Quartet. They made their debut performance in the Wigmore Hall in July 2013 shortly after winning the International Bloch Competition. She has undertaken master classes with the Belcea and Endellion and Wihan Quartets, Erich Hobarth, and Wolfgang Redick, and been tutored by Levon Chilingirian, Evan Rothstein and Alasdair Tait. May has had solo master classes with Jennifer Stumm and Roger Chase. 2016 will be the 3rd year where May will participate in the Mendelssohn on Mull Chamber Festival, performing alongside world-renowned chamber musicians, including the Chilingirian Quartet. In July 2014, she played with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, July 2015, May participated in the Philharmonia Meyer Award Scheme, and in February 2016, was accepted on to the Chamber Orchestra of Europe Academy joining them on their tour to Italy. May is currently participating in the LSO String Scheme. Apart from performance, May takes a keen interest in outreach projects and was awarded a gold medal in the Princess Diana award for introducing music to under privileged children. May is the grateful recipient of awards for Postgraduate study from the Royal College as an RCM Scholar supported by the Fishmongers’ Company Beckwith Award, Douglas and Hilda Simmonds Award holder and Help Musicians UK.
