The Max Rosen Trio is a Manchester-based force that breathes fresh life into the jazz scene. Fusing timeless jazz standards with funky grooves, folk influences, and innovative original compositions, the trio try and keep the art of improvisation alive by showcasing all of these elements live on stage to the audience. Inspired by the virtuosity of legends like Brad Mehldau and Keith Jarrett, George, Pete and Max all met at university having played with each other throughout their studies. The Max Rosen Trio have recently headlined Mindslip at Habitat Studios and Matt and Phred’s and have a series of exciting gigs and new projects on the horizon, as well as being extremely excited to bring their music to Matt and Phred’s in September for the second time.

The Max Rosen Trio performed at Matt & Phred’s in April 2025 to a fully booked audience, who were entranced throughout. These three young but passionate and impressive musicians certainly know how to satisfy a diverse audience. Not only was the band’s setlist (primarily in the areas of jazz, funk, and fusion) appealing and engaging; their relationship with the audience was also hugely admirable, keeping smiles on faces whilst bringing masterful freshness to each tune - the sign of a great band. We have no doubt that this band will go from strength to strength, and look forward to their next appearance at the club.

I recently had the pleasure of watching the Max Rosen Trio play an intimate gig in Manchester’s Habitat studios for a Mindslip Records jazz event. Throughout their two 45 minute sets the band performed a varied programme of standards, more unusual tunes and original compositions, showcasing their versatility and creativity with interesting arrangements. The trio effortlessly switched between a modern electric sound on tunes such as ‘The Glide’ and ‘Someday my Prince Will Come, to a more traditional sound on ‘Bouncin’ with Bud’ and ‘Waltz for Debby’. All three members of the group are confident soloists and are able to handle delicate ballads and faster tunes alike, each with their own distinct voice and creative flair. Max’s lyrical keyboard playing was beautifully supported by the tasteful drumming of George, and Pete’s bass provided a rock solid foundation for the group. The communication between the trio and their ability to support and respond to each others ideas is the sign of a group who listen closely and play together a lot. Their performance was a triumph and I would highly recommend checking out this trio if you get the chance.
