Matthew is an experienced musician with 24 years performing experience behind him, performing concerts and functions in UK, Europe and USA

Matthew Bason began his performing career in 1994, working at a range of venues as a pianist and organist. He played his first solo organ recital in July of that year, at Hadlow Down, East Sussex. He furthered his musical interests, activities and performances whilst studying at the University of Reading; graduating with a B.A.(Ed) Honours degree in Music and Education in 2002. Since 1994, Matthew's reputation has grown to an international level. He regularly travels as far afield as mainland Europe, U.S.A., and Canada to play organ and piano concerts, with the rest of his time devoted to teaching and performing across the U.K. He was due to perform for the first time in New Zealand and Australia in 2010, which was postponed due to the birth of his son, James. At present, a tour is being planned for 2016/2017. From 1994 to 2004 he was Resident Pianist at Sopwell House, St. Albans, where he played as a solo jazz pianist and accompanied other instrumentalist and singers. From 2000 to 2003 he was Resident Musician at Ashorne Hall, Warwick, where he played the Compton and Wurlitzer Theatre Organs, Piano and Yamaha HX-1, as part of the "Mighty Cinema Organ Show" for the "Nickelodeon Collection" tours, and for their highly-popular "Variety Shows" and "Musical Tea-Parties". This residency was cut short by the sudden death of the owner, Graham Whitehead, who was largely responsible for Matthew becoming increasingly involved with theatre pipe organs. Matthew has also held residencies as a pianist and piano-vocalist at Springs Hotel, Wallingford, Oxfordshire (3 years); Kettering Park Spa, Northamptonshire (4 years); Thoresby Hall, Ollerton, Notts (2 years) and shared residencies at The Savoy, Rubens and Connaught Hotels in London (6 years). In 2005, Matthew began to produce concerts known as "One-Man Musical Variety Shows". These shows feature Roland AT350c Organ, Yamaha P105 Piano, Weiltmeister Accordion and Vocals. These shows continue to travel all around the U.K. to both private and public audiences. Where the facility allows, Matthew includes the venue's pipe organ (such as when these shows are produced in a church), thus bringing the instrument to a wider audience. In May 2014, Matthew became a concert artiste and demonstrator for Allen Organs U.K. - builders of some of the finest digital classical and theatre organs. He launched the new Q315T organ at the Blackpool Organ and Keyboard Festival, and can be heard in "concert" and "demonstrator" modes at many of the major organ and keyboard music festivals. In September 2015, Matthew joined the team of resident organists at The Scarborough Fair Collection, in Filey, North Yorkshire. On selected days during the season he entertains visitors with great music on the Collection's Wurlitzer Organ. He is pianist with Milton Keynes-based jazz quartet "JazzEssense" and is one of the resident jazz pianists at The Quod, Oxford

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

If you need to change your timings, please get in touch and I will do my best to accommodate them.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes. I can provide this before, during and after as required. Please contact me to discuss timings and if this will generate any extra costs.

How much time do you need to set up?

If using my own equipment, I aim to arrive at least 1 hour before guests do. This is to ensure equipment is set-up safely, and that a decent sound-check has been carried out.

If I have a piano at my venue, are you happy to perform on that?

Yes, of course - as long as the piano is in working order and in tune, then I'm happy to play on it!

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Yes - you can even ask for music not in the "set list". Please give me a few days notice though so I can either obtain the music, or work it out by ear.

Are you able to bring your own piano or keyboard?

Yes

Can you learn song requests before the event?

Yes - Please give me at least 2 days notice.

What do your clients love most about your performances?

I am able to adapt my playing according to age groups, audience responses and to what is occurring at the time (eg: playing quieter during a meal). I don't copy other musician's arrangements - I put my own ideas in, my own interpretation and style on a piece of music.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I have performed at a wide range of venues around UK, USA and Europe - be it small clubs to churches through to theatres. Notable venues I have performed at in the UK, as a soloist, includes: Oxford Castle; Ashorne Hall, Warwick Savoy Hotel, London Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth; Wolverhampton Civic Hall; The Tower Ballroom, Blackpool; Blackpool Opera House

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Difficult to answer: So many have over the years!

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I have performed many times in the USA, and still do so - particularly at: Orpheum Theatre, Phoenix, Arizona; Crystal Theatre, Crystal Falls, Michigan; Pasadena College Theatre, Pasadena, California;

Fantastic, Matthew played the hymns on the organ beautifully, and there were a few last minute changes, which Matthew took in his stride without missing a beat!

Awesome Pianist high recommend for a type of formal function. He could read the mood of the room and change the genre of the music accordingly.

Having heard Matthew play for ballroom and sequence dancing many times, I hired him to play such music for my wife's surprise birthday party. In addition to that, I asked if he could do some "background" music whilst guests arrived and during the buffet. All of the music was to Matthew's usual high standard - but what really surprised us all, was when my wife asked him to sing "Bring Him Home" from Les Mis. I knew Matthew could sing (as he did during the dance sessions) but my goodness - WHAT A VOICE! A stunning performance! He then did an impromptu "musical theatre" show for about 30 minutes and we were all thrilled to bits with his voice (he's kept that hidden!!). He then returned to his multi-keyboards and continued with the dance with great music and songs. Thank you, Matthew, for a SUPERB night!
