Matt is an in demand London based guitarist and composer, with a distinct musical approach that takes inspiration from many different genres. He can be regularly seen performing around London and the UK in a variety of contexts, as well as leading his own ensemble 'The Matt Hurley Group'.
Currently in his final year of an undergraduate degree at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama studying jazz and classical guitar, being taught by some of the UK's finest musicians including John Parricelli, Phil Robson, Colin Oxley, Barak Schmool, Adam Goldsmith, Martin Speake and Malcolm Edmonstone.
He has also had the privilege of privately studying with legendary musicians such as John Abercrombie, Tom Harrell, Dave Holland, Will Vinson and Ben Street.
Matt has performed in a number of world renowned venues including: Wigmore Hall, The Barbican Centre, Ronnie Scott's and The Vortex Jazz Club.
He has played in a wide variety of settings, from improvised solo concerts to full scale orchestral premiers, and has performed with artists of Jorge Rossy, Anthony Strong, The Southbank Sinfonia, Compass Ensemble, Sebastiaan De Krom (Jamie Cullum, Herbie Hancock) and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.
A highly versatile and creative musician with an eclectic range of influences including Bill Frisell, Wayne Shorter, Steve Reich, Jim Hall, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Björk, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Jimi Hendrix, Sonny Rollins, Mark Ribot, Radiohead, Joni Mitchell and Miles Davis.
Matt is also a passionate educator, regularly teaching students of a wide range of abilities and ages. He is a specialist in Jazz, Pop/Rock and Folk guitar styles.
