Matilda, 21, currently reads Music at Trinity College, Cambridge and studies the Trumpet with Mark David, Head of Brass at the Royal Academy of Music, London. SOLO Matilda made her solo debut at the BBC Proms in July 2016, playing the third movement of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in Eb with the BBC Philharmonic under the baton of Alpesh Chauhan at the two Ten Pieces II Proms. In order to promote these Proms, Matilda performed live on BBC Radio 3 In Tune Proms Special on the opening night of the Proms. Matilda also appeared on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour that week. Matilda has just been awarded the Sidney Perry Brass Award by the Philharmonia Martin Musical Scholarship Fund and will give a solo evening recital at the Cranleigh Arts Centre, Guildford, in May. She has also become a Park Lane Group Young Artist 2017 with pianist Cameron Richardson-Eames. They will perform a recital of contemporary trumpet music at St. John's Smith Square in April 2017 to open the Park Lane Group Young Artists series. In 2014, Matilda won the Brass Category of the BBC Young Musician of the Year and also the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award. Following these competitions, Matilda performed as a soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra for Friday Night is Music Night on Radio 2 and with the Cory Brass Band at the European Brass Band Championships Gala Concert in Perth, Scotland, 2014. Matilda has appeared many times on television (BBC 4 and BBC South East) and on BBC Radio 2, including an appearance on the Chris Evans’ Breakfast Show. Matilda has also won many regional competitions including the Croydon Festival Concerto Competition, the Woking Young Musician of the Year, the Marlowe Young Musician of the Year and the Guildford Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Prize. In 2013, Matilda became the first ever trumpeter to win the prestigious Lutine Prize at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and was awarded the Principal’s Prize in her final year. Also, while studying at Junior Guildhall, she played solo flugelhorn on one of the 8 music barges at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant. Recently, Matilda reached the semi-final of the Arts Club Karl Jenkins Young Classical Artists Prize and performed at the Lower Machen Festival in Newport, Wales, the Deal Music Festival and the Sevenoaks Summer Festival as part of a solo recital tour, Summer 2015. She has performed in many prestigious concert venues, including the Fairfield Halls (Croydon), St. Martin-in-the-Fields (London) and the Mermaid Theatre (London). ORCHESTRAL Matilda was Principal Trumpet of the European Union Youth Orchestra in 2016 and toured with the orchestra playing Bruckner's Seventh Symphony under Bernard Haitink and Mahler's First Symphony under Vasily Petrenko. Matilda returned to the orchestra in November 2016 to perform Mahler's First Symphony at the Gothenburg Festival, Sweden. Matilda was also a member of the orchestra in 2015, playing Mahler and Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphonies under conductors Xian Zhang and Gianandrea Noseda. Matilda played in the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in September 2016 for the Classic FM Live concert at the Royal Albert Hall. She also joined the Philharmonia for a contemporary music concert in King's College Chapel, Cambridge, in October 2015. From 2012-2014 Matilda held the position of Principal Trumpet in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and in her last year she was awarded the John Fletcher Brass Prize for her contribution to the orchestra. Her particular highlight was playing the First Trumpet part in Mahler’s Fifth Symphony at the Barbican in January 2014, for which she received many complimentary reviews, including those from the Telegraph and the Guardian. During her time in the National Youth Orchestra, Matilda’s solos were broadcast live on Radio 3 and also on television (BBC 4) for her performances at the BBC Proms. Matilda was the Principal Trumpet of the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra from 2014-15 and the Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra from 2015-16. Matilda was delighted to be Principal Trumpet in the reduced National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for the Queen’s Coronation Festival that was held in the gardens of Buckingham Palace in 2013. CHAMBER MUSIC Matilda is the Lead Trumpet of the Cambridge University Trumpet Ensemble (CUTE) and performs with them regularly throughout the year. She led the EUYO Brass Quintet in their performances at the Austrian Embassy, London, and the opening of the EU Residency building in Amsterdam in May 2016. She also played First Trumpet in the EUYO Brass Dectet, which performed in Vienna and Grafenegg, Austria and Bolzano, Italy. From 2012-2014, Matilda was the Principal Trumpet of the Junior Guildhall Brass Dectet and in October 2014, she was invited to participate in the Britten Pears Brass Camp in Aldeburgh under Elgar Howarth.
