Mark Nathan recently graduated with distinction from a Masters degree in singing at the Royal College of Music, studying with Peter Savidge. Mark was recognised as an outstanding singer at the age of 13 when he was awarded a Music Scholarship to City of London Freemen’s School where he studied singing with Helen Pritchard. He then went on to complete a music degree at Birmingham University, where he studied with Gordon Sandisson and Catherine Benson. He has also studied and taken masterclasses with notable singers such as Rosalind Plowright, Sir John Tomlinson, Andrew Shore, Ian Partridge and Richard Suart. Mark's previous operatic roles include Marcello (La Boheme - Puccini), Point (Yeoman of the Guard – Gilbert and Sullivan), Adonis (Venus and Adonis – Blow), Koko (The Mikado – Gilbert and Sullivan; Co-Opera), The Artist (Puppet Opera Triple Bill; Winner of Off West End Best Opera Award), Il Dottore (La Traviata - Verdi), Wagner (Faust - Gounod Gob (The Poisoned Kiss – Vaughan Williams), Morales (Carmen – Bizet), Judge and Counsel (Trial By Jury – Gilbert and Sullivan), Narrator (Narcissus and Echo – Opera Viscera; World Premiere), Antoine (La Vie Parisienne – Offenbach; RCM Interational Opera School). His musical theatre roles include Ali Hakim (Oklahoma! - Rogers and Hammerstein), Pharoah (Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat - Andrew Lloyd Webber), Steward (Into the Woods - Stephen Sondheim), and chorus in: Sweeney Todd, Me and My Girl. He has also performed in scenes from Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni), Die Zauberflöte (Papageno), Le Nozze di Figaro (Figaro and Count), Cosi Fan Tutte (Guglielmo), Don Pasquale (Malatesta), Die Fledermaus (Dr Falke), Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Dr Miracle), The Mikado (Pooh-Bah), The Pirates of Penzance (Major General), The Life to Come (World Premiere), Between Worlds (World Premiere) Mark has sung solos in many oratorio works, primarily with societies around London and Surrey. He is also a keen A Capella singer – While at school, he founded a barbershop quartet, which began his passion for a capella music. He then went on to found the University of Birmingham A Capella Network, where he sang in 3 groups and was the musical director for a fourth. One of his groups, The Sons of Pitches, proceeded to become somewhat of a sensation, and recently won Gareth Malone's The Naked Choir. Mark is also a keen lyricist. His debut musical, Riptide: The Slasher Musical, had an incredibly successful run in Edinburgh this August, garnering an award from the Musical Theatre Network. In 2008, Mark wrote and performed a comedy cabaret, The Seven Ages of Man, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to sold out houses every performance. He is currently writing a collection of children's poems: Riddle Me This, which is being set to music for the New London Children's Choir. In 2011, Mark was the musical director for the University of Birmingham’s production of The Pajama Game and in 2012, he artistically directed Britten’s Paul Bunyan to great critical acclaim. Mark plays the cello, piano, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, accordion and the banjo. He plays in chamber ensembles, orchestras and pit bands.
