Originally from Milton Keynes, Maddy Hamilton is a versatile and vibrant cellist. In July 2020 she graduated with a BMus (Hons) from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where she studied under the guidance of Joely Koos and Naomi Butterworth.
Maddy enjoys a varied musical life and regularly performs in many different settings. Throughout her career she has performed at many prestigious venues including the Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, Cadogan Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall with various orchestras and ensembles. A highlight was travelling to Davos, Switzerland to perform at the 2019 World Economic Forum, as part of the Taki Concordia Orchestra under Marin Alsop. Maddy is also a regular member of Capital Orchestra, the UK’s first intercollegiate pop and jazz orchestra, which hosted three sold-out shows as part of it’s year long residency with LSO St Luke’s last year. Maddy is an avid chamber musician and is one of the founding members of The Undercroft Piano Trio alongside Tom Knowles (piano) and Tom Crofton-Green (violin). The three have performed together for 4 years and are currently recipients of the Richard Carne Chamber Mentorship Award. The Undercroft Trio were recently selected as finalists in the Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition and also look forward to competing in the Carne Trust Chamber Competition final in October 2020.
Maddy is a keen session musician and enthusiastic for contemporary music styles. Over the years, Maddy has worked closely with various composers and songwriters; writing, recording and performing new music. She has a long standing artistic partnership with composer Marco Caricola, with whom she often works and collaborates with. Maddy can be heard performing cello on Marco’s score for the original soundtrack to the documentary film, Homs und Ich (2019). Maddy has also had the pleasure to work with pianist and composer, Taz Modi (Submotion Orchestra), whom she has performed with at venues such as Servant Jazz Quarters, Scala (supporting Mammal Hands) and at Cross the Tracks Festival (2019). Other highlights include performing at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival alongside Swiss pianist and composer, Nik Bärtsch and recording at both Air Edel and Abbey Road Studios in London. Maddy has also worked with singer songwriter Sian Magill for many years and has written and recorded cello on Sian’s last two albums, Whirlwinds & Cabinets (2019) and Rivers Know This (2016).
Alongside her performing career, Maddy is a passionate educator. She teaches individual students from beginner to grade 8+ in addition to tutoring various educational workshops and training orchestras. During her time at Trinity Laban, Maddy has gained unparalleled experience in community outreach, particularly working with young people in educational settings. Most notably, she has assisted in Trinity Laban’s top-tier outreach project, Animate Artists, a project which has taken her from the Southbank Centre’s Clore Ballroom to the Tate Exchange.
Maddy currently plays on a c.1830 cello made by Joseph Charotte-Millot.
