Lucy Andrews

Lucy started playing the cello when she was six . At the age of eleven Lucy received a full scholarship to study at the prestigious Purcell School of Music, where she learnt the cello with Michal Kaznowski and Pal Banda, and also had trumpet, singing and piano lessons. In 2009, she began her undergraduate studies on the cello at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, studying under Alexander Baillie and Tim Lowe. Since graduating from GSMD, she has embarked upon a career as a self-employed cellist and music teacher in London. She currently performs with the City String Ensemble and the Lucelli Duo, as well as at other professional engagements. Lucy has performed in France, Guernsey and Uganda and in many major venues across the UK including the Barbican Hall, Cadogan Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St John’s Smith Square and Buckingham Palace. She has been fortunate enough to work under the direction of world-renowned musicians including Sir Simon Rattle, Eric Whitacre, John Rutter and Peter Maxwell-Davies. In 2014 Lucy won first prize in the highly regarded ‘Music at Beaulieu’ competition, gave the London premiere of Cecilia McDowell's 'Night Flight' for solo cello and choir and performed Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Salisbury Sinfonia. Lucy has been delighted to perform for several members of the royal family including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and Princess Beatrice plus other familiar faces such as Damian Lewis, David Tennant, Deborah Meaden, Joanna Lumley, Jude Law, Maggie Smith, Malala Yousafzai, Michael Gambon, Michael Palin, Mick Jagger, Nigella Lawson, Ralph Fiennes, Ronnie Wood, Scott Mills, Sienna Miller and Stephen Fry, among others. A keen chamber musician, Lucy has participated in masterclasses and coaching from members of distinguished ensembles including the Alban Berg, Belcea, Dante, Endellion and Takács string quartets. For two years running her string quartet was selected to represent GSMD in the National Young String Quartet Weekend in association with Wigmore Hall, and in June 2014, they performed live on Radio 3 with Eric Whitacre and the BBC Singers at the Barbican Centre. Lucy also has a great passion for popular music, film music and musicals. She has recorded at Abbey Road Studios for a charity single featuring Sir Cliff Richard, Russell Watson, Boy George and members of The Bee Gees and The Beach Boys and has performed in musicals including Oliver!, South Pacific, 42nd Street, Carousel, Hello Dolly, Beethoven in Vienna, The Legend of Beowulf, Tinseltown and Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens.
