About Lo Ke Ba

Classic and Original Salsa Band, acclaimed throughout the UK and South America and The USA.
Cuban band
Matlock
Public liability insurance of £10 million

Lo Ke Ba is a ten-piece band playing exciting, original, contemporary Afro Cuban music. The music of Lo Ke Ba is a joyful, celebratory mix of the beautifully rich range of musical traditions and styles rooted in Cuba. Lo Ke Ba live propels the audience through the worlds of traditional Afro Cuban folkloric music, classic salsa and contemporary timba into the world of Lo Ke Ba - an elegant, energetic combination of tradition and creativity that brings the vibes, makes you dance and gives you something to think about. Lo Ke Ba sing in Spanish and English about the world as they see it, the lives they have led and the struggles they have encountered, within themselves and between people, under two opposing ideological systems. The music makes you want to move and the songs give you something to think about. Singers, Adriana Lord and Pedro Enrique Medina are both well respected and loved Cuban vocalists who are well-established at the centre of Cuban music in Brighton. They bring all the fire, passion and joy of their home city of Havana to the Lo Ke Ba live show. Lo Ke Ba grew from a 20-year exchange of friendship, culture, music, religion and ideas between the UK and Cuba. Since 2002, percussionist Rich Kensington has journeyed from London to his teacher, friend and mentor Chaguito (Santiago Garzón Rill) in Havana. Ten years after his first trip, he sat on the roof of the Hotel Lincoln listening to what Frank ‘El Matador’ Oropesa had to say: ‘It’s good to have spent all of these years coming to Cuba to learn our traditions but now you must make the music your own’. The message from the world renowned bongocero planted the seed that was to become Lo Ke Ba. Not long after recording with Rich in the studio of El Septeto Nacional de Ignacio Piñero, Adriana Lord set off on her own journey, from Cuba to the UK. After establishing herself as a singer in the UK music scene, Adriana once again met up with Rich and the pair started writing, joined by Matt Baker on piano. Matt completed the circle with his own journey to Havana to meet and work with Chaguito on ideas for the album, bringing not only Chaguito’s words and melodies, but the events which surrounded their writing, to the songs themselves. In the bands first album, Delirio, Adriana, Rich and Matt create eight songs, sung in both Spanish and English by Adriana, about the world as they see it, the lives they have led and the struggles they have encountered, within themselves and between people, under two opposing ideological systems. It’s an album that makes you want to move and gives you something to think about. Delirio was produced by Richard Kensington and Matt Baker in collaboration with Alex Wilson and Eliane Correa. It was mixed and mastered by Jose Mendoza Colmenares (Oscar D’ León). The cover design is by Cuban artist, RAUPA.

I booked Lo Ke Ba as the finale event of a special ‘mini festival’ season I organised and promoted as part of Brighton Fringe '23. They sold more advance tickets than any other act I'd booked and their show sold exceedingly well on the door too - attracting new and more diverse audiences to the venue. The band were very easy to communicate with, turned up on time, were clear about what they needed for soundcheck etc and produced a fantastic show that really wowed the audience who were on their feet all night. The music was absolutely brilliant, really high energy and their playing was tight. Adriana has a beautiful voice and she and Pedro have a great stage presence and really engage the audience - not to mention singing together superbly. The feedback from the audience has been truly amazing and I'd definitely book them again in a heartbeat.

I booked Lo Ke Ba to perform at my venue Peggy's Skylight in Nottingham. The band were easy to deal with and replied to emails and and requests for information quickly. They were really friendly and a pleasure to have in the venue. We had a sell out night that ran to time. The audience reaction was fantastic - they loved the band. They are a big band with a sound to match. Excellent musicians that play together really well. They are great exponents of Afro Cuban music with a performance that's made even better with the inclusion of a significant proportion of well written, well regarded original material. Fun, energetic, quality and authentic.

Customer questions

Do you have different line-up options?

The music of Lo Ke Ba pays is a homage to the great Cuban Salsa bands and as such relies on a big band to get a genuine sound. We'd really recommend booking the full ten piece band to get the most out of us!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We always try our best to be flexible to help ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. If timings change slightly in the run up to the event just let us know.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

Absolutely. This is a really popular request and we actually offer this service for free. If you'd like a DJ service via our PA after the final set until the venue closes, we provide this for an additional £200.

How much time do you need to set up?

We usually set up about 2-3 hours before the performance time. Where possible we prefer to sound check before guests arrive.

Can you roam around while you perform?

Due to the percussion heavy nature of the performances and our sound requirements we need to be on stage rather than roaming... However, we do have a a rooming percussionist that can come into the crowd during a couple of songs to enhance the vibe.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

We're happy to work with you on what you need from a set in terms of atmosphere and vibe although we have learned what works and what goes down well and will provide your guests with the best experience of Lo Ke Ba

Is all of the equipment (e.g. PA & lighting) included in your quote?

PA can be provided for an extra £250

Can you learn song requests before the event?

This is possible and can be talked through with our singers and MD at the stage of booking.
