Liberty Spears is currently in her second year at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, under the tuition of Sophie Grimmer and Alistair Young. In both her first and second years she was given a chance to perform ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream’ by Mendelssohn with the Hawksmoor Wind Ensemble at Charlton House. She sings with three choirs: 'Trinity Laban Undergraduate Choir', lead by the outstanding Dominic Peckham; the 'Early Music Vocal Ensemble'; and the 'Trinity Laban Chamber Choir', lead by Stephen Jackson. Liberty has performed several times with the Chamber Choir and anticipates more opportunities with this ensemble in the future. However, her favourite performance so far has been the 2015 British Composer Awards, in which they sang a UK premiere of Judith Bingham’s ‘A Bird is Singing’ live on BBC Radio 3. The composer deemed the performance "an unforgettable experience." Liberty was chosen to represent Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance to compete in the Kathleen Ferrier Awards 2016.
Liberty started singing aged 7, with Imogen Nicholls, who taught her until she reached grade 8, earning a distinction. She competed in the Jersey Eisteddfod yearly and in her last, in 2013, she won the Junior Section of the Eisteddfod. She was consequently invited to be the soloist for John Rutter's Pie Jesu Requiem. Liberty has participated in opera courses in Jersey and travelled to Madeira for the Madeira Music Competition Tour in 2013 in which she received a Second Category award. She also sang with Imogen’s Musical Originals Choir. They competed in many different venues and won the Children's Choir section at the prestigious 'Young Prague', earning a 1 in 5 gold award in 2009 and 2010, Llangollen International Eisteddfod in 2011 and the Cincinnati World Choir Games in 2012. This included a commissioned piece called 'Mielo' by young Raymond Yiu. Liberty formed a singing trio, who sang close harmony a cappella songs as well as folk and pop music. They sang in many charity events around the Island and after auditioning for Spring Spectacular were invited to sing at 'Jersey Live'.
In September 2013, Liberty was invited to audition for the world renowned Chetham's School of Music by the music director Stephen Threlfall. She was accepted and eagerly began her vocal training under the tuition of Diana Palmerston. In her first year, she was appointed to lead the vocal department as Vocal Prefect. In her time at Chetham's, Liberty had the opportunity to be involved in many concerts, singing in the Chamber Choir with Chetham's Symphony Orchestra in a variety of venues. Performances included William Walton's 'Henry V - A Shakespeare Scenario', Edward Elgar's 'The Dream of Gerontius' and a concert with The Bach Choir at the Royal Festival Hall. The vocal department put on Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Trial by Jury’ and a musical written by a fellow student, Jordan Clarke called 'Tyneham: No Small Sacrifice' in which Liberty was a leading role. In her final year, she was involved with similar concerts such as vocal concerts and a masterclass with soprano Ruby Hughes. She worked on an outreach project, performing an Australian Opera called ’The Silver Donkey’ at The Bridgewater Hall. Liberty also played the First Witch in Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’ and Mahler’s 3rd Symphony, with her idol Sarah Connolly as the soloist.
