The magic of Layer by Layer is that none of the band member are confined to a single role (or instrument); they are really are one collective entity rather than three performers working together.

Charm and Confidence - LAYER BY LAYER - LIVE IN CONCERT The excellent compositions - which the three members of the group slightly under-sell, by the way - are sparky, unusual, and ripe for high-intensity, high-quality, close-focus realisations in the recording studio. The three founder-members of this tantalisingly difficult-to-define ensemble come across very well - their quietly intense presence, an infectious sense of passion and enthusiasm, and tangible trust and familiarity communicated powerfully within the three performers, and from them to the audience. After hearing a lot of the buzz about Layer By Layer, this was the first time I had seen them perform as a group. Their set had plenty of charm, spirit and finesse - exactly as I had expected. The sound was lovely, and the sax sounded very nice indeed - and in tune - which is almost unheard of even from seasoned professionals. Strings and piano sounded good, and their vocals - very nice harmonies in the first piece, and Mischa’s vocal solos in both works, a convincing, likeable and quite colourful voice - confident, with very good intonation, good clear diction, and bags of personality. With miked up voices and instruments, the power and intimacy would enable more direct connection to the audience - a slightly smaller stage with good sound system, or a larger rig on an outdoor festival stage, to give two examples. I think this ensemble has a style, personnel, personality and formula that could really work for a wide audience.
