King's Brazil Ensemble

King's Brazil Ensemble is dedicated to the study and practice of a Brazilian and British repertoire for string orchestra (eventually with soloists or guest musicians). The ensemble was created in 2015 and had his debut in a performance at the Brazilian Embassy in London, in March 2015. The members of the ensemble, mostly, are or were music students at King's College. The creation of the ensemble was an initiative of Dr. Vinicius Mariano de Carvalho, Lecturer at King's Brazil Institute, who is also the director of the group. In the Autumn of 2015, the ensemble performed the European premiere of the operetta ‘The tram’s Conductor Sweetheart”, by the Brazilian composer Noel Rosa, as part of the Festival Arts and Humanities of King's College London. The arrangements for this performance were made by Stefan Metzger, especially for the group, and the operetta libretto was translated by Prof. David Treece. For this performance, the ensemble had the special participation of many other musicians. In January 2016, the ensemble performed for the opening of the Brazil Week, hosted by King’s College London, playing the ‘Concerto for guitar and orchestra’, by Heitor Villa-Lobos, with Mark Samama as soloist. Still in 2016 the group will perform the world premiere of "Canções Cortesãs," based on Shakespeare's sonnets, and written especially for the ensemble and the soprano Gabriella di Laccio by Brazilian composer Harry Crowl.
