Khemi Shabazz is a London-based oboe player whose diverse musical interests have enabled her to perform at a number of fantastic venues in the capital and beyond including the Southbank Centre, Cadogan Hall and the Tate Modern. Khemi holds a first class degree in performance from Trinity Laban. During her studies she won the Evelyn Rothwell Oboe Prize as well as being a finalist in the Harold Clarke Woodwind Competition in her 3rd year. She performed regularly in the college Symphony Orchestra as well as in smaller chamber orchestra projects such as Wren Ensemble and Shapeshifter. It was at Trinity that Khemi developed her love for chamber music and became a member of the Risatina Quintet as well as the newly formed CrossContemporary Project, which specialises in music of the late 20th to the present day. Outisde of Trinity, Khemi has performed with a number of orchestra’s most notably Chi Chi Nwanoku’s Chineke! Foundation Orchestra which has been broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 including chamber performances on BBC InTune. In addition to this Khemi has performed with the Collaborative Orchestra, Sidcup Symphony Orchestra and recently the Minehead Festival Orchestra. Whilst Khemi's passion for classical music grows and grows, she also has a strong enthusiasm for other styles. In 2009 she became a part of the Grand Union Youth Orchestra, which specialises in world music and jazz and developed a love of improvisation. One of the highlights of her involvement with the youth Orchestra were having performed at BT London Live, Wilton's Music Hall and at the Ealing Jazz Festival. She has also recently taken part in performance projects involving electronic music including live performance collaborations with electronic music producer Slime who received critical acclaim for his album ‘Company’ and whose work has featured on BBC Radio 6.
