About Kathryn

Harpist available for weddings, functions, orchestral work and teaching
Harpist
Wakefield
Public liability insurance of £10 million

As a freelance professional harpist, Kathryn enjoys a varied career which explores a breadth of musical genres in a variety of settings and ensembles. As a soloist, she has performed across the UK in several concert series and competitions and has played in masterclasses for esteemed harpists such as Sivan Magen, Maria Luisa Rayan, Marie-Pierre Langlamet and Caroline Lizotte. Kathryn is particularly passionate about contemporary music, and in recent years she has performed in many UK and world premieres of new works either as a soloist or as part of an ensemble or orchestra.   As an orchestral player, Kathryn has worked with several internationally renowned conductors, such as Vassily Sinaisky, Jac van Steen, Sir Andrew Davis and Vasily Petrenko. In March 2019, she performed with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra, whose concert featuring Gustav Mahler’s ‘Symphony No. 5’ was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 as part of their ‘Young Artists’ Week.’ However, Kathryn’s experience does not end with classical orchestral repertoire - she has also performed with several opera and theatre companies, several contemporary music ensembles, and she even performed with the Black Dyke Brass Band during the RNCM Brass Band Festival 2020.   Kathryn performs regularly across the North West as part of the Rascallity Harp Duo (founded in 2015 as the Septentrion Duo and subsequently renamed.) Rascallity not only seeks to explore new and obscure classical repertoire for two harps, but also creates original arrangements and compositions which fuse elements of jazz, Latin, folk and world music.   Kathryn has been performing at weddings and events for over twelve years, and as such she is comfortable performing and arranging repertoire from a variety of different genres. Her work has taken her to many beautiful wedding venues across the North of England, and she always appreciates being able to contribute to special events.   Finally, Kathryn has experience teaching harpists across a wide range of ages and abilities, both in a one-to-one setting and in larger scale workshops. She finds great joy in nurturing a love for the instrument and growth not just as a harpist but also as a musician.

Kathryn was absolutely perfect for our wedding. We were only a month from our wedding when our other musician cancelled, I wish we’d gone to Kathryn first. All communication was great, and the performance on the day was everything we hoped for, Kathryn was able to read the room and provide the perfect background for our wedding. 10/10, if anyone was to ask for musician recommendations Kathryn would be top of my list!

Customer questions

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

I've performed in many venues across the UK, including dedicated music venues/theatres such as the Royal Albert Hall, Bridgewater Hall (Manchester), and Palace Theatre (Manchester), as well as countless beautiful wedding venues, churches and more.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

Going back many years, I played at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the School Proms 2012, which was an amazing opportunity to have as a young musician performing at one of the highest profile music venues in the UK. More recently, I played in 'The Carpenters Story' at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, which really appealed to my theatre-loving heart!

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I understand that timings can change between initial booking and the day of, and as such I very rarely book more than one performance a day, so as to allow greater flexibility within a booking. I just ask that I am informed of changes as necessary.

How much time do you need to set up?

I aim to set up between 30 minutes and an hour before performance time.

Is the transport of your harp included in your quote?

Depending on distance, I may include travel expenses of roughly £0.45 per mile - if in doubt, please get in touch.

Do you need any equipment provided to play outdoors?

I am able to play outdoors, but I would ask that a dry, flat, level surface is available, and that there is easy access to cover from the elements (e.g. wind, rain and direct sunlight.) In some circumstances, I may need to be/move inside to protect my very valuable instrument from being damaged.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

I am as happy to create a fully customised setlist using the most meaningful songs to you as I am using my experience to make a setlist using a more general guide for the 'feel' you want. Whether it's playing different genres at different times or wanting to veto a specific song/artist, I'm happy to work with you to create your ideal wedding day soundtrack.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

My setlist is non-exhaustive, so it may be that I already have an arrangement of a song you choose. If not, then I can discuss the possibility of tracking down an arrangement with plenty of notice. In cases where a custom arrangement is needed, then I may charge an additional fee.
