Having learnt piano from an early age and performing in many school, college events as I grew older, I've always loved singing and playing both for personal pleasure and in an increasingly professional capacity. My parents both had fabulous voices and always had Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra et al on the radio as well as a great deal of all sorts of other musical styles - classical, pop, blues, latin ..you name it we listened to it! I've several degrees in Music - BA Hons + MA (researching Jazz Improv. & the Vocalist, Traditional Irish Music & Performance Practice) & LTCL Piano Diploma - and currently teach & perform to a high standard mainly in the SW UK where I am based, also further afield. I have recorded several acclaimed albums with notable UK/International jazz artists - including John Horler, Tony Coe, Alec Dankworth, Winston Clifford - over the past decade, touring the UK with Jazz Services Funding & garnering rave reviews. I have a wide ranging repertoire from Bach to Ed Sheeran and am equally at home performing laid back jazz to full-on funk, pop, soul or rock with virtually everything in between! I sing in a number of different languages (Portuguese/Brazilian, Spanish, Italian etc) & love French in particular...so romantic.. I am currently in the process of forming new musical liaisons and hope to create some original material in the coming year. I am happy to discuss your particular musical event requirements should you contact me, and assure you I will always provide a top quality performance when booked. Over recent years I have been performing in numerous festivals and venues around the Uk including Beaminster, Gillingham & Swanage Festivals in Dorset; Duchy of Cornwall Nursery Lostwithiel; Dillington House Somerset; Bridport & Guggleton Farm Arts Centres; Marine Theatre Lyme Regis and many more weird and wonderful venues! I have performed a number of well-attended Retrospective Concerts together with my double bassist and fellow pianist featuring the music of Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, Elton John and Sting. I love what I do and my audiences seem to love it too!

Julie was a professional from start to finish. Our communication was smooth and prompt. Julie had jumped in at the last minute to cover another pianist that let us down. The event was always going to be odd and Julie did he best in a difficult situation. Julie arrived on time, her roadie (husband & chauffer) set up quickly and professionally, whilst Julie took on board the comments and requirements from organisers. I would book her again and cannot recommend her highly enough. Ian M. Centre Manager BMC Hampshire.

Your warm welcome and thoughtful support on the night was much appreciated Ian - what a great bunch of people you are: I really felt welcomed right from the start! Appreciating the tricky dynamics of the event itself and disappointment of being let down, I’m glad the music went a decent way towards fitting the bill nonetheless. Thank you for your kind and perceptive thoughts and I look forward to possibly being of service on another occasion in future. Very best to you!

Julie came to our rescue when our band let us down just 2 weeks to our wedding. She went to great lengths to provide us with everything we were looking for and even let us use their sound system (speakers etc.) When they had finished playing. Julie was very professional throughout the process and guided us through the day. We would 100% hire Julie again and will say to anyone looking for a fantastic band for any occasion to book her. Thank you once again Julie you and your band made our wedding day so perfect.

So glad you were happy with what my band and I played Poppy - I have to say we were totally blown away by the enthusiasm of your dancing wedding guests and I’m sure that made us play even better as a result!! It was a great pleasure to have been able to have provided you at late notice with the music you wanted for your big day after your previous disappointment etc, and I’m hoping you and your guests will have happy memories of the day for many years to come. Many thanks for looking after us all so thoughtfully, I can tell you the band certainly appreciated their cold drinks in the hot weather! Take care and thanks again for asking me and my musicians to bring some musical happiness to your wedding celebrations. Julie x

Julie's Personal Music Messages (PMM) are a real find for that special occasion, and more so in the current circumstances when it is difficult to get out. I found it very easy to use the website to request what I wanted and was amazed by how quick it was to get the PMM. It was for my brother-in-law's 70th birthday and I was thrilled with the result, and my brother-in-law was 'deeply moved'. This is some of what my brother-in-law and sister said in response: ' .... the gift of song in 'Living Hope' is a precious gift. For such thoughtfulness we most wholeheartedly thank you both and Julie. You have made this day so beautiful!'

Customer questions

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

If working with others: whilst I have to be mindful my musicians may have other performing commitments and may be unable to be as flexible as they would like, I myself try to be as flexible as possible and do my very best to accommodate any unforeseen changes to the original booking as long as communication is good and expectations are reasonable.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

I can provide PA to play itunes/playlist through mobile phone or tablet but don't currently provide DJ service in addition to my live performance.

How much time do you need to set up?

1 hour is perfect, half an hour can suffice if really necessary, ie if access to facility is limited or constrained by other factors.

If I have a piano at my venue, are you happy to perform on that?

As long as the piano is in tune and has all the requisite notes I'm fine by that! However, I would need to be sure of its reliability beforehand.

Can I pick the songs you play from the set list?

Of course I would be most happy to oblige wherever I can (as long as I am given enough notice/have a reasonable amount of time to absorb any unfamiliar tunes/tunes not currently in my repertoire) - I know a huge repertoire of songs but still find there are more to learn!

Are you able to bring your own piano or keyboard?

Yes. My excellent Yamaha Stage Piano has seen me through many a successful gig over the past several years and gives a solid yet expressive & complementary accompaniment to my voice, with its varying sound possibilities. The Grand Piano feature is my favourite, but I frequently employ split/double sounds (eg piano & strings or piano & bass etc) for variety.

Can you learn song requests before the event?

As long as any specific song request suits my voice (ie I'm not a coloratura soprano so I would regrettably decline to perform Mozart's "Queen of the Night" Aria however much you paid me!) I am absolutely up for learning anything new - I love discovering new songs of any genre and am incredibly fast at absorbing new material.

What do your clients love most about your performances?

My love of performing, my engagement with my audiences, my absolute commitment to giving the audience a great time; my sense of humour & fun; my versatility (If I feel the time is right to change my song list unexpectedly, I am very adaptable and try to assess what's right at any particular moment)

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Pizza Express Dean St; Pizza on the Park, Knightsbridge; NT Foyer, South Bank; Bulls Head, Barnes; Symphony Hall Birmingham; Millennium Centre Cardiff; Stables Wavenden; Bridport Arts Centre; Marine Theatre Lyme Regis;various jazz clubs including Ascot/St Ives & many more.. Numerous festivals including Llandudno, Swanage & Chichester Jazz Festivals & more.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

Ella Fitzgerald, Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Lennon & McCartney, Barbra Streisand, Sting, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, George Harrison, Suzanne Vega, Carole King, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, JS Bach, Handel, Ravel, Debussy, Faure....basically too many to mention!

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

There are several fairly high profile gigs I've done but among them Dean St Express at start of UK album tour ("What's it All About" on 33 Records) stands out as a terrific night, with superb band comprising myself on vocals; pianist/composer/arranger John Horler; virtuoso Sax player Tony Coe; bassist Paul Morgan; Drummer Quinny Lawrence.
