Julian Chan

Julian began playing the violin at the age of 8, but didn't begin professional training until he was 18 years old, when in 2006 he began his studies on the viola and decided to pursue performing as a career. Shortly after, he gave his first concerto performance, the Viola Concerto by William Walton, accompanied by Dame Alice Owen’ s School Symphony Orchestra and subsequently began his undergraduate studies at Royal College of Music, London, in 2007 with professors Ian Jewel and Susie Mészáros. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music in viola performance in 2011. Julian works with orchestras in and around London, and with chamber ensembles, both on viola and the violin. He has toured with the Adoramus Orchestra and the Kings Chamber Orchestra throughout the UK and abroad and has played with the Arion Orchestra and the Ardente Opera Company. Julian plays with various orchestras including the English Young Artists Sinfonia, the London Young Sinfonia, the London Musical Theatre Orchestra and the London Festival Sinfonia amongst others. He has also led the viola section of the North London Philharmonic Orchestra and is a mentor for the viola section of the annual English Schools Orchestra courses. Besides classical music, Julian has experience playing alternative styles of music, from Mowtown cabaret, contemporary jazz, pop and classical crossover bands to playing in various musical theatre productions, shows and recording sessions for short film and album soundtracks. Julian also plays in chamber ensembles providing music for weddings and functions.
