Joseph Wicks is currently reading Music at Cambridge University whilst being Junior Organ Scholar at St John’s College. He spent a gap year as Organ Scholar of Hereford Cathedral, and before this was a Walter Stanton Music Scholar and the Sixth Form Organ Scholar at Lancing College. He began his musical education as a Chorister, later Bishop’s (Head) Chorister, of Salisbury Cathedral, singing with them for six years where he first enjoyed the daily round of evensong and the rich repertoire of an English Cathedral Choir. In his role as Bishop’s Chorister he had the opportunity to be the Boy Bishop.
Joseph began the organ aged 11 with Andrew Post at Salisbury Cathedral School, continuing with Neil Cox at Lancing College and Stephen Farr in London. He now continues to study with Daniel Cook and Gordon Stewart in Cambridge and London. Joseph is an Associate of the Royal College of Organists (ARCO) and twice won the Lancing College music competition on the organ. Recent recital venues include Hereford and Wells Cathedrals, St John’s College, Cambridge, St Laurence’s, Ludlow and St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol. He particularly enjoys accompanying, and his first CD as organ accompanist, The Welsh Connection, was released in July 2013. Having gained plenty of valuable experience accompanying Hereford Cathedral Choir in a large proportion of their weekly services, Joseph plays an even larger proportion for the world famous Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge and also accompanies them on their busy broadcast, recording and international tour schedules. Joseph’s ultimate ambition is to be a Cathedral organist and Director of Music.
In addition, Joseph remains as committed as possible to singing, and is taught by David Lowe in Cambridge. He is a graduate of the prestigious Genesis Sixteen, a training scheme for talented young singers run by internationally renowned choir The Sixteen and its director Harry Christophers. In Cambridge, he fills up what spare time he has with consort singing, performing in many such groups as well as some chamber choirs. Principally, Joseph is a founder member of Mousai, an exciting new vocal ensemble of 12 young singers now based in London, and sings with the Gentlemen of St John’s and The Gesualdo Six. He has deputised for many cathedral choirs and the Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge, and also took a full part in the Three Choirs Festival 2013 in Gloucester.
Joseph’s concerts are advertised at www.organrecitals.com and on his own website at www.joseph-wicks.co.uk.
