Joel is embarking on a career as a freelance musician, primarily based in London however he has been travelling around the country with various orchestras. In 2017, he graduated Masters with distinction and awarded a DipRAM at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Michael Thompson, Richard Watkins, Martin Owen, and Roger Montgomery. He has been awarded a Richard Mereweather bursary to continue studying at RAM and is currently a holder of a Countess of Munster Musical Trust scholarship.
Before joining the Academy, Joel completed his undergraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, learning with Lindsey Stoker, Julian Plummer and Tim Jackson as well as studying natural and baroque horn with Beccy Goldberg. Joel’s studies at the RNCM were generously supported by the John Fewkes (Leicestershire) Instrumentalist Scholarship Fund.
Whilst at the RNCM and at RAM, he has taken part in masterclasses by Frøydis Ree Wekre, Thomas Hauschild, Jacques Deleplanque, Radovan Vlatkovich and Alberto Menendez.
Whilst at RAM, Joel has performed in various positions in the Symphony Orchestras conducted by Ed Gardner, Yan-Pascal Tortelier and Christian Thieleman, as well as playing principal horn in the RAM Opera performances of Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night. Outside of RAM, Joel has been playing professionally with the BBC Philharmonic and Hallé Orchestras as well as touring with Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
As well as orchestral playing, Joel enjoys performing contemporary music. Joel recently played in the London Sinfonietta Academy in Summer 2016, performing music by Anton Webern, Tristan Murail and John Adams. In 2017, Joel performed with the London Sinfonietta in their performance of Thomas Adés’ “In Seven Days” at the Royal Festival Hall.
