About Jay

Hi! I'm Jay, a lovely, friendly, and diverse cellist available for weddings and private functions around the UK, and beyond!
Cellist
Burnham-on-Sea
Public liability insurance of £10 million
Verified profile

From well-loved classics such as The Swan, Bach Cello Suite in G, and The Wedding March, through to pop favourites like John Legend "All Of Me" and Christina Perri "A Thousand Years"; beautiful church hymns like Love Divine, Lord Of The Dance, and How Great Thou Art, whilst adding film and theatre favourites such as "She" from Notting Hill, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, and of course, the Main Theme from Game Of Thrones, so far there's been no limit to what I can play for you on your wedding day! I have 1st class degree-level training in professional music software, which I use to create specific requests, and I’m more than happy to arrange your favourite piece of music for you. I can also sight-read fluently, and improvise where necessary. I've played cello for 30+ years, performing with numerous orchestras and ensembles around the UK, from north Scotland, right down to the south coast. I was longest serving Principal cellist for Midland Youth Orchestra - now CBSO Youth Orchestra - and when I'm not busy playing professionally for weddings and events, I perform regularly with Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra and Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra. I've also travelled internationally with my cello, including Canada, Jersey, and most of Europe. Away from orchestras, I've been invited as backing strings for numerous musicians, have provided music for Max Factor promo shoots, and am often invited to work with music students exploring creative arts through music. I studied in Birmingham with a Masters Degree in Performance (distinction), and am currently working on a Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music. To maintain an excellent standard of playing, I currently study under award-winning cellists Richard Jenkinson, Lionel Handy, and Jane Salmon. I travel worldwide, and can perform for as little or as long as you need. Most importantly, I am fully insured with Public Liability insurance which covers me for the majority of venues worldwide.

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Some of the most repeated comments I hear about my performances, is how beautifully I play, how I settle in quickly without any fuss, and how much the guests enjoyed the music I performed!

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Dartmouth House, London Walcot Hall, Shrewsbury Jersey, Channel Islands Middle Temple, London Pershore Abbey, Pershore Stoneleigh Abbey, Kenilworth Leominster Priory, Leominster Cornwell Manor, Cotswolds Porchester Hall, London Pembroke Lodge, London Gunnersbury Park, London Rudolfinum, Prague The Queen's House, London Deer Park Country House, Devon

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

I'm influenced by a huge variety of artists! I have very eclectic tastes, and feel I can learn much more in terms of style and technique, by keep my options open. That said, whilst I enjoy Bach on the cello, I do love non-traditional classical music, and also love to play soul, fusion, world music, and folk on the cello. I listen to just about anything!

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

All of my gigs are high profile, in my opinion! But, if I had to choose, I think maybe doing a promo video for Max Factor...or perhaps performing for a prestigious graduation ceremony at The Queens House in London. I've played such a wide variety of events, it's genuinely difficult to choose!

Do you have different line-up options?

I am a solo cellist for events, however I can take special requests for duets and small ensembles, and can work with other musicians whom you may wish to book for your event.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

Absolutely no problem! Nothing is ever set in stone, just make sure to keep me as up-to-date as possible, so that I can provide the best service for you.

How much time do you need to set up?

As long as there is a suitable chair (with no arms) for me to sit on whilst I play, I should literally only need about 5 minutes. For weddings, I will usually start playing about 15-30 mins before the start of the ceremony.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

You are more than welcome to pick and choose pieces from my play lists! If you're booking me for a wedding, then you just need to let me know what you would like for your entrance, signing the register, and your exit. If you have any special requests, or something not on the list, let me know and we'll work something out.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Almost! I will just need a chair to sit on, preferably one with no arms on the sides. I provide everything else, so you don't need to worry.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

I can do, as long as I can make it suitable for solo cello! Ideally I will need between 3-6 weeks notice before your event, so that I can source, transcribe, and learn the music in advance. There is a fee of £30, by agreement.
