Saxophonist
London

Jasmine Smith is a fourth year BMus student, based in Norwich and London, studying classical saxophone at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Jasmine was enticed by the saxophone’s rich tone and emotional expressiveness at the age of 9. She was taught by Elsabe Ray and David Fitzgerald who both encouraged her musicality and enthusiasm. She began playing lead saxophone in the Norfolk Symphonic Wind Band and was also a member of the Guildhall Norfolk Centre for Young Musicians where she studied composition, played in a saxophone quartet and lead saxophone in the jazz band. She won third prize in the Norfolk Young Musician Competition of 2019. At present, she is studying classical saxophone with Christian Forshaw, jazz with Michael Foster and doubling with Nick Moss. Jasmine is the saxophonist for the Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra, performing concerts every season. She also enjoys playing popular music with DJs at bars, parties and events across London. She is a committed steward for the London Symphony Orchestra, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for attendees. For the last three years she has been a senior casual at the Junior department of Guildhall, working with students and staff members, organising classes and acting as an information point. Currently the woodwind teacher for the Tower Hamlets Art and Music Education Service, she provides education for underprivileged children and teaching for small woodwind classes. She has covered woodwind one-to-one tuition and whole class recording teaching at Christ Church Primary School in Hampstead. In her spare time, she is passionate about composing and arranging her own music, incorporating and blending disparate styles including classical, minimalism, electronic, contemporary, jazz and pop. She enjoys playing in a saxophone quartet and regularly performs with her saxophone and harp duo. Jasmine is a skilled multi-instrumentalist, playing soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone and flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, recorder and piano. Since studying at the Guildhall, she has grown into a passionate musician and an accomplished performer. Jasmine conveys emotion through her playing, evoking memories and feelings through music.
