Verified profile

Janna started performing at the age of six on recorders and soon also the cello, as part of growing up in a very musical family. She has a BA honours music degree and a Masters in contemporary music and is experienced in chamber / group work as well as solo performances. As an award-winning musician, she brings real enthusiasm to her work, and has played a range of string instruments in very varied settings, from solo cello in the Mike Westbrook Big Band and lead-violin in an orchestra and string quartet, to tarhu and Cretan lyra in a World music band, specialising in Eastern Med dance tunes. She has also performed widely as a classically trained singer in many recitals, concerts and weddings.

Customer questions

Do you have different line-up options?

I happily perform on my own for that pure, haunting cello sound, but also regularly play or sing either with a pianist and / or with other strings - either a trio or quartet. We are flexible and aim to find the best solution for your event.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I will do my best to fit in with your timings as much as possible and usually will be able to accommodate some minor changes right up to the day.

How much time do you need to set up?

As I perform acoustically (without PA) my set-up time is very short - only 5 to 10 minutes.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Certainly. Usually though it will be a mix of carefully discussed and chosen pieces and others of a similar style / genre to fill in the gaps. How much input you choose to have is largely up to you.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, I will bring everything I need - apart from a chair without armrests which I will ask you to provide.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Certainly! Over the years I have arranged and performed many songs and pieces that my clients have asked for specifically. Depending on the level of work involved for each of these, this will usually be limited to 2 - 4 pieces per performance / event. However, for cello solo performances this number can be considerably higher. Let's discuss tunes!

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Previous clients have remarked on the richness and beauty of my tone, my musical playing etc, but perhaps above all they have noticed the sheer pleasure, joy and love I have for my music.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Over the years I have performed as soloist, ensemble player or orchestral player in many venues as varied as concert halls, churches, pubs, gardens, halls, private houses and even a teddy-bear shop throughout Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Wiltshire and Bath. Two of my favourites are The Guildhall in Bath and the beautiful church in Dartington, Devon.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

As a singer I have benefited above all from the wealth of knowledge of Mollie Petrie, Bristol. As a cellist, I adore Natalie Clein amongst others. But I learn from all sorts of musicians I meet and play with - it's an exciting journey!

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I have played for a few Military Wives concert, both on cello and on violin. Playing a bit of solo violin to an audience of about 700 people was wonderful and not something I thought I'd ever do. But I love standing on a big stage, and usually do that as a soprano soloist.

Janna was pleasure to deal with, and dealt seamlessly with our re-arranging and re-arranging due to Covid which we really appreciated. Her pieces on the day were beautiful and provided lovely moments during the ceremony for us to pause, watch and enjoy. Really beautiful playing which many of our guests commented on! Thanks Janna!

Janna was absolutely amazing! We booked her to play for our wedding - which we had to move due to a lockdown. She was prompt in replying, easily changed the date and was most importantly a stunning cellist! We couldn’t recommend her more and will do so at any chance! Thanks Janna!

Everyone loved Janna"s music. She composed tracks especially for us which turned out beautifully. I was very happy to have had her play the music for our ceremony. Perfect communication leading up to the day also. The only reason for 4 stars on punctuality is as she had trouble finding the venue, but it's perfectly understandable as it was in the countryside! It didn't effect the day at all. She was excellent.

Peter K, 2 years ago

This year was my wife’s 75th birthday and she took up the cello some three years ago and has passionately fallen in love with the instrument. I went on “encoremusicians.com” looking for a cellist to come and perform for her birthday. Living in St Agnes, in Cornwall I thought the chances were slim that I would be able to get someone. Janna Bulmer came out of the woodwork. I listened to her on line, and she sounded just the ticket. I signed up for her and she duly arrived on time (how did she find the house - out in the wilds of the mining country)? for an hour’s performance at my Son in Law’s private house. It was just her and us...just two of us. It was a total surprise for my wife and she was more than gobsmacked when we were sitting in the kitchen and she heard the cello being played in the living room. (My son in Law had done some devious manipulation to get her in the house unseen and unheard). So we moved to the living room and had a glorious hour of so talented cello music from Janna . Playing for an hour to just two people in a small room, can’t have been easy. You have no other backing music nor orchestra to be part of. You are it, and you only. Janna was amazing. So calm and focused, so lovely in her choice of music. (I had suggested the type of music but had left the actual pieces entirely to her). It was a lovely hour and so moving. We were transported for the time into an amazing rhythm of perfection. Janna brings a beautiful instrument to life and the tone and involvement was mind blowing. Thank you Janna, you did us proud.

A ‘cellist of distinction, Janna Bulmer plays with a sheer grace and beauty that make it seem that the ‘cello and the player are one entity. The richness of her playing transforms the most complex music to a profound joy and simplicity; a stunning accomplishment for the first ever performance of one piece and the classic familiarity of another. ‘Bye for Now’ by Rob Young, 2019 (written especially in memory of a dear friend) and. ‘Tom Bowling’ (from Fantasia on British Sea Songs arranged by Sir Henry Wood, 1869 -1944) both achieved that seemingly effortless ease of pure musical integrity. The quality of both players, pianist and ‘cellist, gave the music a sense of transcending the present to belong to a timeless centre. Our concern now is that just one London agent will deprive the South West of two of its most enriching musicians.
