Verified profile

Janna started performing at the age of six on recorders and soon also the cello, as part of growing up in a very musical family. She has a BA honours music degree and a Masters in contemporary music and is experienced in chamber / group work as well as solo performances. As an award-winning musician, she brings real enthusiasm to her work, and has played a range of string instruments in very varied settings, from solo cello in the Mike Westbrook Big Band and lead-violin in an orchestra and string quartet, to tarhu and Cretan lyra in a World music band, specialising in Eastern Med dance tunes. She has also performed widely as a classically trained singer in many recitals, concerts and weddings. Her solo cello performances at weddings and other events have become very popular in the last few years.

Janna played beautifully at my dad’s funeral. She was so responsive and thoughtful- sending over multiple recordings and making suggestions to help my family select the right music. Communication was excellent and she was extremely professional and considerate, recognizing this was an important day for our family. We were all very grateful to Janna.

Janna performed at my wedding in June and she was fabulous! She went above and beyond to attend to play during my weddjnv ceremony and she also worked alongside a fellow musician which togehther provided the duoambient atmosphere desired for my wedding breakfast. They were exquisite with their symphonies and made the moment feel even more special and intimate.

It was perfect having Janna play at our wedding ceremony and background music afterwards, it gave our special day a bit of class ♥️ Janna was very professional on the lead up to our day asking lots of questions on music and layout to ensure a seamless performance ♥️

We had a wonderful wedding day accompanied by the very musical and talented Janna. The tunes we’d selected, a mix of classic and contemporary added just the right background. Janna was charming, we’d definitely recommend her.

Janna played at our first wedding during Covid so we already knew she would bring professionalism and musical magic with her when we asked her to play at our wedding reception this week. We didn’t expect it to be even better than last time! Not only did she beautifully rearrange and play a traditional Iranian wedding song but we left song selection in her capable hands and everyone of the guests was impressed by the choices.  Even more astonishing was her kind dedication - she came even though she could quite understandably have cancelled on the day due to personal circumstances. We are so grateful to her, as her presence made the day so much more special. Would absolutely recommend.

We asked Janna to play at our wedding in August 2022. She was recommended to me by my high school music teacher and she was just amazing. It was very easy to communicate with Janna and share ideas of music that would make our day personally special, nothing was a problem and she was able to play everything I requested during the ceremony from ‘The Swan’ to ‘Prelude in G Major' and numerous more popular songs during the canopies. Janna made our day feel just perfect and we hope there will be an occasion in our lives where she can play for us again . If you're reading this review I’ve no doubt that she would make your occasion feel just as special x

Customer questions

Do you have different line-up options?

I happily perform on my own for that pure, haunting cello sound, but also regularly play or sing either with a pianist and / or with other strings - either a trio or quartet. We are flexible and aim to find the best solution for your event.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

I will do my best to fit in with your timings as much as possible and usually will be able to accommodate some minor changes right up to the day.

How much time do you need to set up?

As I perform acoustically (without PA) my set-up time is very short - only 5 to 10 minutes.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

Certainly. Usually though it will be a mix of carefully discussed and chosen pieces and others of a similar style / genre to fill in the gaps. How much input you choose to have is largely up to you.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

Yes, I will bring everything I need - apart from a chair without armrests which I will ask you to provide.

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

Certainly! Over the years I have arranged and performed many songs and pieces that my clients have asked for specifically. Depending on the level of work involved for each of these, this will usually be limited to 2 - 4 pieces per performance / event. However, for cello solo performances this number can be considerably higher. Let's discuss tunes!

What do your clients love most about your performances?

Previous clients have remarked on the richness and beauty of my tone, my musical playing etc, but perhaps above all they have noticed the sheer pleasure, joy and love I have for my music.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

Over the years I have performed as soloist, ensemble player or orchestral player in many venues as varied as concert halls, churches, pubs, gardens, halls, private houses and even a teddy-bear shop throughout Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Wiltshire and Bath. Two of my favourites are The Guildhall in Bath and the beautiful church in Dartington, Devon.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

As a singer I have benefited above all from the wealth of knowledge of Mollie Petrie, Bristol. As a cellist, I adore Natalie Clein amongst others. But I learn from all sorts of musicians I meet and play with - it's an exciting journey!

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

I have played for a few Military Wives concert, both on cello and on violin. Playing a bit of solo violin to an audience of about 700 people was wonderful and not something I thought I'd ever do. But I love standing on a big stage, and usually do that as a soprano soloist.
