Jane Lawrence has been researching, arranging, composing and performing music for many years. With a background in Ethnomusicology, she brings to life the music she plays, with innovation and creation, yet remaining true to the music. The combination of her classical training in violin and piano with her study of and passion for music of different cultures, makes Jane's playing unique. She has composed and performed music for theatre (Soho Theatre Company and Faulty Optic Theatre of Animation) and played with the bands Chouchenn and Beckham (with Jane Harbour of Spiro, Jon Swayne of Blowzabella and Becky Price of Boldwood) and currently plays in the fabulous band The Balkanics (Klezmer and Balkan) and more recently the Klezmer quartet, Mozaika. She also has been running a folk band in a school for over 10 years now in Kirkby Lonsdale, Salt Pie Lane. As well as being a fantastic fiddle player, Jane is also and incredibly accomplished pianist, with a particular love for playing Bach, Mozart, Bartok and Kabalevsky. She is also a member of the fabulous Lancaster based Haffner Symphony Orchestra.

Jane and her band played at our big event (our son’s Barmitzvah) and they were sensational! Jane led her team mesmerically and got everyone in the great big room listening and swaying along, especially to the klezmer numbers which we all somehow knew enough to hum along to, at least after a few bars (the musical type, not the drinks, though they went well together). It was the best atmosphere we could have hoped for and biggest thanks to the band.

Ms. Lawrence stood rocking slightly, her hair held back from her head in flowing tresses, at one with her violin. She had become shamanic, making music both passionate and lyrical, tender and strong, sad and joyful; and at the same time she brought to the piece the respect, authority and musicianship of a virtuoso of the classical repertoire. It was a transcendent moment. We were connected to our shared humanity; the intelligent and creative being that makes beauty.
