Teaching My teaching style offers all kinds of piano and keyboard as well as songwriting and composition. The aim is usually enjoyment and stimulation. I have taught piano for around twenty years to students aged 4-70 in different formats and am equally happy in classical or non-classical styles, although I have a self-confessed soft spot for song development. My approach is friendly and intuitive, as I know everyone has different aims, and gets rewards from many different things. The aim is really to get the most satisfaction out of this amazing instrument, and so targets and clarity are very important. I speak a number of languages, should that be helpful, and am PGCE trained, having worked also in all kinds of schools. I have an Enhanced DBS certificate, and students can opt to learn on a Goetze grand piano or a Privia electronic piano keyboard. I can usually provide access to a range of other keyboards and instruments if students are interested. "Build a band" days are also available, should they be required. My Musical Background: A creative musician, I have a particular passion for Chopin and Debussy. I also thoroughly enjoy pop styles, in particular soul music, and am currently working in the open field of prog rock with some very well known artists. My last album “Refugee” for the band “Hookstick” was a venture to combine original soul, funk and other styles with modern pop, using virtuoso musicianship in a very light context. The album was released in 2017. I also write inventive soundtrack and neo-classical music. In performance, I am an improviser and can add piano where required to drama activities and also to plays, theatre and pantomime. I can create songs to order for performance by adults or children. Music very much reads and translates the words of my compositions which are highly significant to me – I work mainly with current topics and themes.
