James fell in love with music playing violin at the Fenland Music Centre Saturday school. At the age of 14 he had the opportunity to try out the oboe and soon progressed to playing for the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Youth Orchestra. James was awarded a scholarship to study for his BMus in oboe peformance at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, learning with with Melinda Maxwell, George Caird and Gail Hennessy for baroque oboe. In 2015 he was accepted onto the prestigious EU Erasmus+ scheme to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Whilst in Birmingham James regularly played oboe for orchestral concerts, recordings and opera performances, including the Conservatoire’s unique triple-bill of Holst’s Savitri, Vaughan-Williams’ Riders to the Sea and Ravel’s L'enfant et les sortilèges and Birmingham Opera Company’s award-winning production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the disused Carling Academy in 2016. Engagements closer-to-home have included performances with East Anglia Chamber Orchestra, Cambridge University Music Society and The Sampson Orchestra of Cambridge. In 2018 James became Principal Oboist with Norfolk Symphony Orchestra, with whom he was a soloist in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Winds in June 2018. That same year James was invited to join Ely Sinfonia as guest Principal Oboist, culminating in a sell-out performance of Gustav Holst’s The Planets in Ely Cathedral. In January 2020 James joined the faculty of music at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge as an Associate Lecturer in Music, teaching modules in entrepreneurship. Prior to joining Anglia Ruskin, James worked in music administration at Ely Cathedral, playing an active part in shaping and implementing a rich and exciting programme of concerts and events. James was also the Administrator for Ely Cathedral Business Group (2017– 2019), focusing on developing the group’s communications strategy and project managing the Cathedral’s annual Celebration of Business (please see the 'Administration' page to read more about James' work at the Cathedral). A keen pianist, accompanist and répétiteur, James has collaborated with vocalists at Cambridge University, Anglia Ruskin University and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. James plays a Marigaux 901 oboe.

We were totally satisfied with James. He did a great job playing pieces for our wedding ceremony - learned every piece we requested, played everything brilliantly, and dealt with a minor hiccup with equipment with very short notice without any issues at all. Strongly recommended, thanks James!

It really was the icing on the cake. So glad we decided on having a pianist play during our drinks reception. The music was not over powering, it just complimented the experience perfectly
