Cambridge based oboist, baroque oboist and pianist. Music and Liturgy Administrator at Ely Cathedral.

Versatile oboist, pianist, and arts administrator from Cambridgeshire. I currently serve as the Music and Liturgy Administrator at Ely Cathedral; managing in house concerts and overseeing the Cathedrals internationally renowned choirs whilst maintaining a busy diary freelancing as an orchestral musician and keyboard accompanist. In 2013 I was awarded a scholarship for Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and studied oboe with Melinda Maxwell (Birmingham Contemporary Music Group), George Caird and baroque oboe with Gail Hennessy (Academy of Ancient Music). I later studied with Karel Schoofs (principal oboe, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra) at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels whilst on the Erasmus+ scheme in 2015. I'm frequently involved in performance based projects in collaboration with other students at both Conservatoire’s highlights including playing principal for Birmingham Conservatoire’s acclaimed double and triple opera bills (Venus and Adonis, and Actéon in 2015; Riders to the Sea, Savitri, and L’enfant et les sortilèges in 2016). I regularly play principal with Ely Sinfonia and Norfolk Symphony Orchestra. I have previously played for Birmingham Sinfonia, Pembroke College Cambridge, New Cambridge Symphony Orchestra, and baroque oboe engagements with Akeman Chamber Orchestra, La Serenissima and Birmingham Opera Company’s critically acclaimed Dido’N’Aeneas production. Away from the oboe I provides keyboard accompaniment and coaching - specialising in vocal and operatic repertory. My experience is primarily with University and Conservatoire level students but also includes work with theatre companies and ABRSM examination candidates.

We were totally satisfied with James. He did a great job playing pieces for our wedding ceremony - learned every piece we requested, played everything brilliantly, and dealt with a minor hiccup with equipment with very short notice without any issues at all. Strongly recommended, thanks James!

It really was the icing on the cake. So glad we decided on having a pianist play during our drinks reception. The music was not over powering, it just complimented the experience perfectly

... the soloists interacted, skilfully, giving us much pleasure! I always hope for Mozart performances to be full of such whit and sparkle!
