Jack Waterhouse

I developed an interest in music performance and its culture when I was younger, I loved watching people play music live. So, I decided to learn how to understand and play music, starting on the Euphonium. I enjoyed playing the Euphonium, but when I was in secondary school I picked up a new instrument, the drums. I loved learning how to play music because it allowed me to express myself and it has also developed my perseverance, patience and focus. As I honed my skills over time, I went from being a novice who struggled to play a basic rock beat, to a more refined drummer who has played in a number of performances. I have shown much commitment to music performances, playing in various bands in the local music service, a jazz association and several school bands. I've also performed in a number of musicals such as Les Miserables, Grease, Bugsy Malone, Jesus Christ Superstar and Little Shop of Horrors. These musicals have shown me how important it is to consider other aspects of a performance like following a musical director, paying attention to tempo changes, and listening out for vocal cues. On the other hand, the bands have allowed me to understand a variety of different genres and develop my improvisation and phrasing skills which are both essential when playing in ensembles for jazz and popular music. I feel like I've become a more confident and well-rounded musician from working with other people from both the bands, and the musicals.
