Ítalo Arauz is a Chilean drummer and versatile session musician with years of experience performing and recording across a wide range of genres including jazz, pop, Latin, rock, and indie. Ítalo began his musical journey as a self-taught drummer, later studying classical percussion at the Conservatory of Music at the Catholic University of Valparaíso. He also trained privately with the renowned Chilean percussionist Ricardo Ruiz, combining technical precision with a deep musical sensibility that defines his playing today. Influenced by the language and improvisational depth of jazz, Ítalo’s drumming has been praised for its virtuosity, versatility, elegance, and creativity — and his dynamic control and musicality make him a solid, reliable, and expressive collaborator on both stage and studio projects. Over the years, Ítalo has built an extensive career both in Chile and the UK. He is a long-standing member of Matorral, one of Chile’s most acclaimed alternative bands — earning the Pulsar Prize for Best Rock Album and Best Production in 2016. In addition to his work with Matorral, Ítalo has performed and recorded with a variety of artists including Cadenasso, Javier Barría, Andrés Valdebenito, Natisú, Franz Mesco, Leo Quinteros, Aguaturbia, Nito Mestre and many others, spanning national and international tours. Since moving to London, Ítalo has continued to expand his career, collaborating with projects such as Imperio Bamba, Los Iracundos, Naomi in Blue, Maria Monroy and The Cruel Vision. He has also recorded at several renowned studios, including the iconic Abbey Road Studios. Ítalo is also proud to be an official Canopus Drums endorser, performing and recording with Canopus’ renowned craftsmanship and sound quality. Whether on stage or in the studio, Ítalo brings solid timing, creative musical ideas, and a highly adaptable playing style. His warm and professional approach makes him a reliable addition to any live or recording setup. I had the pleasure of hiring Ítalo for an academic event where we wanted to create a warm and beautiful atmosphere through Latin music. His performance was truly exceptional — moving, elegant, and deeply thoughtful. He brought not only great talent and sensitivity but also a sense of aesthetic coherence that elevated the entire experience. The music blended perfectly with the occasion, creating an atmosphere that was both intimate and memorable. I highly recommend Ítalo for any event where music is meant to touch people and enrich the setting.

The album “Remote Control” opens the scene of that era to a new aesthetic, even if it’s not immediately noticeable. Between 2010 and 2020, Ítalo Arauz must have recorded with an impressive number of bands and solo artists. At the same time, he completely reshaped the sound of the indie scene with his drumming style: playing slower, bringing a more jazz-infused sound, and using the cymbals — especially the ride and the hi-hat — in a distinctive way. For me, all of this starts with Los días santos by Leo Quinteros. I’ve always seen Matorral as The Band when they backed Bob Dylan, if we were to cast Quinteros as Dylan and The Band as Felipe, Antonio, Ítalo (plus Espiñeira).
