Bagpiper
Inverness

Iain's family roots stretch from Ballycastle, County Antrim, N. Ireland to Port Glasgow, Scotland and as far south as Lincolnshire. He learned the pipes at the age of 8 years old with a local pipe band. In 1983 he joined the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and completed several piping courses at the Army School of Piping, Edinburgh Castle. He performed at various ceremonial duties at both Edinburgh and Stirling Castles, as well as royal duties at the Palace of Holyrood. He transferred to the Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in 1986 where he spent his remaining career. During this time, notable performances included playing for HM Queen Elizabeth II's 60th birthday celebrations at The Royal Albert Hall and a performance for the then President, Ronald Reagan in front of the White House. A day at the races resulted with a meeting with HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother at Royal Ascot and a solo performance at Crown Prince Pavlos' wedding to Marie-Chantel which resulted in a photo feature in Hello Magazine no less. Added to the aforementioned, several tours of the USA, countless excursions across Europe, countless appearances at the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo and other Tattoos around the world, the odd trip to the Middle East and the Falkand Islands all made for an eventful career. He attended the Army School of Piping at Edinburgh Castle again, where he attained various piping qualifications by completing the army's prestigious Pipe Major's Course. In 1992 the Pipes and Drums were proud to be selected to perform at The Esplanade, Edinburgh Castle, to accompany Mike Oldfield on his newly released album Tubular Bells II. In 1993 Iain played at the Royal Geographical Society in London at a press conference on the occasion of Sir Ranulph Fiennes's return from his latest unaccompanied Antarctica venture. Following retirement from the army, the natural progression at the time was to join the police and as such, Iain passed off the square at Tullieallan Police Training College and joined Tayside Police. He soon became involved in the Police Pipe Band and was quickly instated to the position of Pipe Sergeant. In 2012, Iain became Pipe Major of the Carnoustie and District Pipe Band and it wasn't long before the band climbed onto the prize lists at major championships. He moved to Inverness in 2015 and following a spell at Police HQ Inverness, Iain then retired from policing in 2017. He now plays with the City of Inverness Pipe Band. On retirement from the police, Iain was fortunate to be involved in the Moscow Tattoo held on Red Square with the magnificent backdrop of St Basil's Cathedral and the Kremlin. He has now created a business in the local area of Inverness offering piping and Gaelic singing as well as providing wedding cakes and poetry.

Great communication all the way through when planning our wedding. Offered choices on what outfit/tartan to wear, was able to learn a tune I had requested for walking down the aisle. Great service!

Customer questions

What do your clients love most about your performances?

I am a professional from start to end. From the first point of contact with me you will realise that you are going to receive my full attention and that I will do everything I possibly can to ensure your big day or event goes without any issues.

Which venues have you performed at in the past?

To name a few: HM Queen Elizabeth II 60th birthday celebration, Albert Hall. HM The Queen Mother - Cheltenham Festival President Ronald Reagan - The White House Greece's Crown Prince Pavlos's wedding to Marie Chantal Sir Ranulph Fiennes return from Polar Exploration The Royal Edinburgh Tattoo Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells II The Moscow Tattoo.

Which artists have you been most influenced by?

A number of superb solo and bagpipe players and pipe bands. But I also have a wider appreciation of music in general from pop to classical music.

What is the most high profile gig you've performed?

It has to be for HM the late Queen Elizabeth II's 60th birthday celebration at the Royal Albert Hall. But Mike Oldfield's release performance of Tubular Bells II at the esplanade Edinburgh Castle, was a close second.

What if my timings change after I've booked you?

We aim to be as flexible as possible and will work with you to ensure your event runs as smoothly as possible. Any issues at any time please get in touch to discuss.

Can you provide an iPod/DJ service before and between your sets?

This is not something that is usually requested of a piper.

How much time do you need to set up?

Tune up time for a piper usually takes approximately 15-20 minutes to ensure that the pipes are settled, in tune and sounding as professional as possible.

Can I pick the pieces you play from the set list?

You can choose tunes from our lists but in our experience it is best to consult with family and friends and pipers! We can advise you if you are looking for a particular style or genre of pipe music.

Do you bring all the equipment you need to perform?

I have two sets of pipes with me at all times in case of breakdown with a set. Being a woodwind instrument, it is fraught with issues in cold and wet climes and also whenever the instrument feels like it's just not going to play!

Can you learn specific pieces before the event?

I can learn tunes given enough notice. However, there are certain tunes which simply just do not sound as good as the original version, when transposed onto the pipes. Be careful with what you choose, but we would let you hear the proposed version long before the day of the event.
