Born in Hong Kong, Ian began piano and violin lessons at the age of 6 and started singing lessons at Loughborough Grammar School where he held a Double Dyson Music Scholarship. Ian is now in his final year reading Music at Trinity College, Cambridge where he is a Choral Scholar, and sings with Trinity College Choir and Polyphony under Stephen Layton. Ian currently studies with Roderick Earle from the Royal College of Music and has worked with Joan Rogers, Audrey Hyland, Amanda Roocroft, Joseph Middleton, Steven Devine and Russell Smythe. Forthcoming masterclasses include Sir Thomas Allen, Dame Felicity Lott and Nicholas Mulroy. Ian is a two-time Pembroke College Lieder Scholar, a programme designed to coach the most promising singers and accompanists at the university, winning places for piano accompaniment and singing. Ian also recently won the 2016 Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra and 2016 University of Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competitions. Future plans for 2017 include Handel's 'Messiah' and Bach's 'St John Passion' with Polyphony at St John's Smith Square, Mahler's 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen' with Cambridge Symphony, Vaughan Williams' 'Five Mystical Songs' with Cambridge Philharmonic and Trinity College Choir and Schumann's 'Liederkreis op.39' and Menotti's 'Telephone' in San Diego and in Los Angeles. Recent solo engagements have included Handel's 'Messiah', Faure's 'Requiem', Mozart's 'Mass in D' and Esenvald's 'Passion and Resurrection', Beethoven's 'Choral' Symphony No.9 and Mahler's 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen', and being selected to play Junius in Britten's 'Rape of Lucretia' and the Count in Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro' with Cambridge University Opera. With Trinity College Choir, Ian has sung the baritone solos in Durufle's 'Requiem' and Martin's 'Messe pour double choeur' alongside international tours to Europe, North America, South East Asia and Australasia. Ian has also appeared on BBC, Australian and Hong Kong radio and television.
