Hugo Lau

Hong Kong-born clarinetist Hugo Lau is currently a Postgraduate Advance Diploma student in Trinity Laban major in clarinet performance, after completing his master in Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), under the tutelage of Antonio Salguero, John Bradbury and Nicholas Cox. His studies are generously supported by the RNCM Bursary Award 2015-17. He received his Bachelor of Art (Hons) in Music Studies degree with first-class honours at the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), where he studied with John Schertle (Co-Principal Clarinet of HKPhil) and Johnny Fong (Principal Clarinet of HK Sinfonietta). Hugo is an active orchestral player and has appeared in concerts at the Asia Pacific Band Festival, International Band Fair and Hong Kong Youth Music Camp. He has collaborated with internationally acclaimed conductors, including Sir Mark Elder, Mark Shanahan and Henry Shek. He received the opportunities to perform in major venues, including the Barbican Hall, Kings Place, Hong Kong Cultural Centre and China Conservatory Concert Hall. Hugo has enjoyed playing in various ensembles at the RNCM, including the Symphony Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, Composers’ Lab, Mozart Cosi Octet and the workshop with Netherland Wind Ensemble under the baton of Bart Schneemann. He is also the principal clarinetist of the New Hong Kong Orchestra, the bass clarinetist of Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Newham Philharmonic; and was the former principal bass clarinetist of the HKBU Winds Symphony as well as the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra. He had performed in masterclasses with Javier Llopis, Paolo Beltramini and Nathan Williams. Hugo is also an enthusiastic chamber musician, currently involving in the Gin Woodwind Trio and RNCM Clarinet Choir.
